The photo in article 25 (thanks Midland Red) is superb - shows how much better the layout was pre-war, with Trinity Street and Burges being well connected to Broadgate. |

Sorry MR, it must have been the Liverpool connection which had me confused.

Owen Owen restaurant 1955
I remember this restaurant in Owen Owen but I also remember the 'Midway Restaurant' that I think was on the 2nd floor. The Midway was waitress service and a bit more upmarket than the self-service in the basement. This may have been the first place that I tasted percolated coffee. |

It was on a mezzanine terrace, overlooking the sales floor.
My mum would only eat there if she "had her face on". The rest of the time we slummed it with the plebs in the basement cafe.

Morning Dutchman,
Well now, I won't go out unless I have my 'war paint on' - a saying from my Mum. All the times I went in to Owen Owen's I never did go into the cafe there, and from what I can remember, we always used to call it Owen & Owen's just a habit at that time I guess. |

My late housekeeper always called it "Owen's" and always referred to the events of 14th November 1940 as "The night they bombed Owen's"!

My first job was as a waitress in the Midway at Owens. I also remember my gran and her friends going there, dressed up in their best clothes with their faces on. Fur stoles were the order of the day.
Has anyone got any photos of the Midway in the late sixties/seventies?
