Rob, you're supposed to be on HOLIDAY, so put the laptop away and get outside. You've got the whole of the winter to make your refinements so OUTSIDE NOW. Thats an order. Alan. Alan

I can't say if it works yet for this site but usually editing the first post in a thread also allows you to alter the thread title. |

You're so thoughtful Alan, I appreciate that. But once the evening comes and we're done for the day, I find this quite relaxing.... and besides.... once I get a bee in my bonnett about this sort of thing, I can't relax until I've sorted it!
Cheers,

I hadn't allowed for that previously, but I've now added that little extra bit of functionality.... thanks for mentioning it Tony! I'd not thought about it before, but we all make mistakes, said the Dalek as he climbed down off a dustbin, so you can now correct your title! |

That reminds me of when I first went into business and mobile phones had only just arrived on the scene (although thankfully it wasn't that great house-brick of a device). I was on a caravan park down at Brean, standing in the corner of the site shop, (quietly) answering someones software problem - when another shopper walked passed me and said, in a rather loud voice - "For Gods sake, you're supposed to be on HOLIDAY!"
Thanks Rob! |

Forum GalleryHi folks! I've created something new for our forum, something I've been working quietly on behind the scenes for the last month or so. It's a...... Members Picture Gallery It's something that members can use to display images in two main categories - "Coventry" and "Other subjects", so you're not limited to our hometown for this. Within either category you can create as many galleries as you like to sort your images into different subjects. I've added two galleries just to get it started - a small one of my own and one for Morgana to display her lovely art work. I plan soon to expand mine to include old Coventry postcards and old engravings of our city, too. It's early days yet, and I'm sure there will be teething problems and improvements to make, but I think it basically works. I've put on two small restrictions to help protect the site - a member must have been on our forum for at least one month and posted at least 5 messages to qualify for a gallery. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas to improve or change this. One future idea I have is to add a "comment" facility, so people can make (hopefully complimentary) remarks for any image. Right, let's see how this goes.... and maybe this can be discussed with some in the morning over a sausage! |

I forgot to mention above.... once you're on the gallery index page, use the "Gallery admin" link in the linkbar to go through the steps necessary to create and edit your gallery.
Cheers,

Are you not the 'bestest'? Thank you for that Rob. I am sure this will prove to be very popular.
Thanks again
Hope you all had a good day today. |

Hi Rob, great idea. Is it your intention to put all the photographs posted so far into the gallery (either us or you)? And can we split the gallery into folders, or pages, so as to make it easy to search?
Another thought about it is, would it be publicly accessible without joining the Forum? I ask, because we do seem to get queries from people who don't appear to be obvious participants; also, from my experience of forums generally, it's a pain to have to join one just to look up one item - and some forums even charge for you to access an item these days (not really the intention of the Internet, methinks!) |

What am I not doing or doing wrong. Please, no detentions after class! I will not be on line until this time tomorrow. "O'h thank the Lord!". Who said that?
Hi Philip,
Firstly, many thanks for another lovely morning our earlier - hope you enjoyed your sausages!
I see that you've successfully uploaded your first photo to the gallery. I've just realised an oversight on my part - which I've now corrected (I told you there'd be teething trouble!). Until the gallery creation process had been completed I'd automatically hidden all the other controls, including the ability to upload additional images! I've now added a little "(Upload more images)" link on your admin page, so you can continue uploading photos before commiting them to a gallery category.
So now, if you return to the Gallery link at the top (or bottom) of any forum page, and then use the "Gallery Admin" link, simply upload some more pictures, then use the final step "4. Add one of your images to a gallery".
Best of luck

Now I've had a proper look at it, I see that paging is easy. One thing I don't see is an obvious way to move images from the existing uploaded set to the gallery - or is it your intention that we start afresh with the gallery? |

Hi Philip & Keith you have to upload your new photo on to the new site not the old take a look at the top it says upload a picture one, then you return to add your subject (add your things) you then select other and press go then click on file name then under that your title then under that your sub catagory, make sure it goes to white by clicking each time you fill in the fields less if its still blue it won't work hope this helps oh by the way your tulip garden is gorgeous.

Hi Keith,
At the moment it'll be for a fresh start and not have any particular connection with current discussion topics. I haven't created a special means of "importing" files yet, although that's not a bad idea. Having said that, it would only be a one-off process, so probably not worth all the effort - I can do it manually for now.
However, if you have any particular sets of photos that you'd like me to move across to the gallery (I thought perhaps your super wildlife shots in the "The Witch at Corley Rocks" topic), then let me know and I'll locate the relevant image files and move them across for you.
Meanwhile, you're welcome to upload a few and start a gallery anyway - I see Morgana has been busy already and has quite a selection.

Yes, but the reason I asked the question is that we have all uploaded a lot of pics to the present upload scheme, a lot of which would be nice uploaded to the gallery - but it depends what the purpose of the gallery is. Is it purely to share photos among ourselves, or is it to replace the previous scheme? For just us, or for public viewing too? If it is to replace the previous scheme, then it would be nice to be able to copy them straight across; if it's just for Forum members to share photos, and not be linked into posts, then I don't have to concern myself with it at what for me is a very busy time - partly because I've spent too much time on the Forum (yep, it's addictive, unfortunately!)
If it's for just us, we also don't need to be concerned about copyright, but we do if it's to be accessible by the public. Indeed, even if just for us, whilst I'm sure we would 'play the game' straight, there ought to be something like a "please respect others' ownership of copyright and don't copy without permission" statement.
I hope you understand where I'm coming from. |
