Ah yes! Thumbs up The vans appear to be in the barracks square rather than the yard behind the Telegraph building in Hertford Street. Part of the old barracks must have been incorporated into the printworks at that stage.

I think this source is new - lots of pics I've not seen before from all over Coventry. Many of the photos are from the recording work done in the 50s... before they knocked stuff down. Sad Historic England

Some of the pictures at Historic England pose as many questions as they answer. The more you think you know about a place the bigger the shock is when you finally find a definitive photograph of it. Helen will understand what I mean.

I'm constantly bewildered Lol I might never started this project if I'd known how complicated Coventry was. I'm now on the south side of the city. Much Park Street was a pig, not least because there aren't many images available of the bottom end. Greyfriars and Warwick Lane are even harder, although the area near the gate is newer than I'd thought. The Historic England photos are great images and I'm surprised they weren't part of the Pictures of Coventry collection. Having talked to various people, I knew about the survey that most of these came from but hadn't seen more than a few of the photos. I'm guessing that there might be even more because there are still a few buildings missing and quite a few backs that they would probably have snapped eg There was a row of old buildings on the south side of New Street. Until I found these pictures, I had only aerial photos and a couple of images of a building further west. Of this block, I now have 2/3rds of the group but there should be another photo showing the end.

Birmingham's archives If you view by 100s at a time, on the 500s onward there are some photographs. Some you'll know but there are a few new ones. The photos are the ones with a thumbnail link (fifth column). Note, the link to the original doesn't always show the whole photo compared to the thumbnail but if you're interested presumably you could visit the Library. Lots of other records too but no thumbnails.

And more good news.... Since Google switched off hosting for Google-Drive the Library Pictures have not been viewable, as some of you will have noticed. However, I've now finally found an alternative free server that will do the job.... so we have our Coventry Library Collection back again. Simply use the blue button up there on the left to access them as normal. Thumbs up

Rob, Charabanc, Helen F and Neils Yard (everyone) I am bowled over by the Library Pictures. I had seen many that have been posted on the Forum. I was so surprised to see Cuckoo Lane with the Cathedral choristers in procession, and the house in Trinity Lane thought to be used as the first synagogue in Coventry! To have all of these on line and accessible is a treat, especially as at one time you would need to visit the Herbert to see them! More of Hertford Street bridge under construction and the New Broadgate being built with the Godiva statue already in place. Fabulous and a testimony to how wonderful Coventry once was and tourism would rocket had these streets and buildings survived!
