This weekend both restaurants in Cathedral Lanes were packed.
If this means people don't travel out for their lunch/evening meals out, then this can only be a good thing!
I have noticed in recent months the city centre seems to be getting busier at the weekends. |

A photo I took in 1984 from the corner of High Street showing someone peering down this very well. The side of Owen Owen (now Primark) can be seen on the left, with the framework of what is now J.D. Wetherspoons (right-centre) just visible through the trees.
Can anyone recall the ruins that were there at this time and what they were actually of? |

I don't know the ruins, not sure if the well was just a public well out on the pavement of Broadgate????

This one links in well to the image I posted earlier pre-Cathedral Lanes, only further to the left.

Great picture! Interesting in showing the small building that was in front of the library has sadly gone.

According to this article, Cathedral Lanes is now home to "the city's thriving new dining quarter"
Even though nothing will change my view that it should never have been constructed in that position, it is excellent news that it now enjoys this success
Sadly, my age and location suggest that I shall never be able to sample its delights, so I look forward to other commentators' reviews of some of the dining places |

We use Cathedral Lanes a lot now and tend to eat out in Coventry rather than travel elsewhere. In fact this weekend gone we went there twice!
The restaurants there always seem busy and they've also made Broadgate much livelier at night.
Looking forward to the rest of the work - which I believe involves improving the back of the building.

I used the fabulous piece of art known as the 1851 Board of Health map to create an overlay with a modern aerial view on this Historic Coventry page.
With Holy Trinity Church and parts of High Street, Bayley Lane & Cuckoo Lane as common ground to old and new, hopefully the "Site of Ancient Cross" marked on the 1851 map is correct and gives us our spot near to the corner of Cathedral Lanes... which also explains why it wouldn't really be practical or desirable to place the new cross exactly on its original spot.
I also recently added a new passage to the bottom of that page, discussing the history of "replica" crosses.

Apologies but I have a soft spot for Cathedral Lanes because I found a present for my Mum there on my very first Christmas shop in the city. I still have it as a memento of her. The shop has long since gone but the fond memory remains. It was also the first time I saw the cathedral and I could be wrong but I seem to remember there being a back exit from the shops on that side. |

Yes, Helen, you could access from the rear through what is now Turtle Bay, though I can't recall what it was called originally. |
