Caludon Castle (ruin)

Caludon Castle sits on park land now, with three side's still having a moat. It fell into disrepair many years ago, But still has a charm about it that sets your mind off with images of battles and brave men. The one wall of the Great hall is all that remains, The fireplace and chimney run up the center of the 5 ft thick outer wall, and with a camera, one can see all the way to the top. The great hall would have been twice the size the wall is today. Window edges can be seen at both ends, adding to the grandour of the place. The one thing that has my mind at a worry, is if you build a castle with 5ft thick walls and a moat, all to keep it safe from attack, Then why put massive windows in ? The lower pic show the outside of the wall with all the pitted stone work.

Caludon Castle has always held a fascination for me, not only as I attended Caludon Castle School along with the rest of the male members of my family (I was the first female to attend the school) but I also live a 5 min walk away and used to play in the park as a child. The link below gives a good basic knowledge of the Castle. However, I have many books on Coventry with stories of the Castle if any one would like me to I can give a synopsis of these stories if the Forum would allow? Wikipedia entry

Thanks Babby25, The castle was built shortly after the Norman conquest and was first owned by The Chesters in about 1070 - 1101, making it one of the oldest building's in Coventry. You can add links to other sites to save having to write it all out. LINK I have not got the idea of links yet as you can see.

According to David McGrory's "The Illustrated History of Coventry's Suburbs" the name Caludon comes from "callod" and "don" meaning mossy rise. It originated as a Manor House with the first record being around 1200. It is also rumoured to be the Birth Place of St George!

Used to love Cally Park. Here's Penny from 2000.

Being brought up in adjacent Farren Road, many a happy hour spent in Cally Park! My mate could climb to the top of the chimney. Mass football and cricket matches, climbing trees, the playground and swings that would loop over the bar! The moats were fun, war battles hurling lumps of mud at the Belgrave Road lot (although the occasional stone did cut a head or two open ) There was a pond by Bodmin Road in the early 1970's before they built the industrial units with all sorts of newts and frogs, sad to see it disappear The floods in February 1977 when the Park was turned into a huge lake, never seen it like that before or after. These roles are vital for the continued success of our small but active organisation. The park has recently attained the Green Flag award and as such is now considered to be one of the cleanest and most used parks in the Country. Our group meet once a month at most and we are a friendly and welcoming bunch who have close ties with the Park rangers, the Parks manager and Coventry City Council. We also have a working relationship with English Heritage because of the Castle Ruin (scheduled Monument) that lies with the park.
