The council said this 3 years ago, don't know if it will ever happen. Nationwide have got another premises, maybe a step towards it?

As part of the plans a survey of the affected structure, including the original subway is being undertaken. There are details in this pdf with some interesting views of the basements and a plan showing the original subway ramps.

I don't know why the council are obsessed with protecting that ugly bridge defacing the bank - an architechtural crime, but they did nothing to protect beautiful Broadgate Garden and now that's completely gone. If only they could be forced to remove it!

The National Provincial Bank was built before the war and the side and front were designed to complement each other. When the bridge was built, it hid the impressive pillars in Hertford Street and ruined the original concept. During the war the planners were already drawing up plans to close off Hertford Street with a huge `slatted` structure.

Broadgate House (including the former Hertford St bridge) was grade II listed in 2013, the bank was grade II listed in 2010. So when the bridge is one day taken down, I assume the hidden part of the bank will need to be restored to its original condition.

I daresay we can expect reports, as the work progresses, claiming that it was "torn down", "ripped to pieces", or even "blown up", instead of "carefully dismantled piece by piece, in accordance with health and safety regulations, so that there were no injuries or any danger to the public". Lol

Hi all Wave This is only my take on this. I liked the Bridge Restaurant when first built, in the days when Broadgate was a "green & pleasant island", where traffic flowed freely around and under, and where Hertford Street was a place worth shopping in. In the days when a bus ride from Broadgate to the railway station was far quicker sixty years ago than it is now. As a restaurant, the Bridge was never properly or commercially developed. I remember pestering my mum to take me for something to eat there, yet even in prep-school days I had my first disappointment. Our grammar school dinners were far superior. I can remember my mum saying "I told you so". She had been before. ps If my English teacher is still looking, I have used a comma and an and together. Oh my

This was the Nationwide last Sunday. I assume they are only removing that and the bits at the side (and the place at the back of it) UNFORTUNATELY, and nothing more?

At the risk of straying threads, can they take the roof off Hertford Street as well whilst they are at it?!

As I understand it, the Council have borrowed more millions to `upgrade` Hertford Street. From past experience this will be the destruction of the the buildings which survived the war (at the bottom end) and there was talk of getting rid of the Barracks car park and a few other buildings as well.
