Coventry's wells

Mediaeval Well at 123 Spon Street - says so here and photo, scroll down on link

The pub is a lot older than suggested on that website so the well may have been used to provide water for the making of beer.

Not noticed this one before that CDAS have just photographed outside the University Jaguar building.

I think that was at the back of the Blue Pig. It seems to have been under the malthouse, though I think that the pump was in court 14.

There were so many springs and water laying around Coventry that it wasn't the ideal healthy place to live, lots of mist and fog, and flooding, yet it suffered most from fire, It had some of the most fertile soil surrounding the city until the 1950's when man destroyed it with chemicals. But from photo's on this forum it looks as if it may be recovering.

I passed this on to Rob on FB but worth sharing here - 1974 and interesting as it shows the clearance of the temporary shops which revealed cellars of old below. I think this was also when Broadgate stopped being an island to drive around. Post copied from topic Broadgate on 8th Jul 2020 5:47 pm

Those two pictures come tantalisingly close to identifying where the well was.

Helen F, Are you talking of the old peacock well later the mayor's parlour? That would be some find.

Hi Kaga. I know where the pump was at the Mayor's Parlour but not where the well that served it was, but no, this well (in the picture) was almost on Derby Lane - it maybe served the Pope's Head. There was a conduit in Broadgate (probably above the well), said to be on the same side as the cross. Which is unedifying as the cross seems to have been mostly in the middle but could be said to have been on the Mayor's Parlour side. Later the conduit source was covered over and a new one built in Cross Cheaping near the corner with Ironmonger Row.

Helen. Rob has several images in the Library Pics of this well, I think incorrectly labelled as Bishop Street as references the Toby's (Head I presume!). Always wondered if it could've been linked to that Broadgate one - there appears to have been several.

Could be Neil. Hmmm, I got the impression that there was a well at the corner of Bishop Street and Silver Street but Well Street wasn't far away so why? It has a back garden look to it which would match the Derby Lane/Broadgate well position, though it wasn't near the Toby's Head. I shall mull it tomorrow. It could be that the Toby's Head and the Pope's Head were at one point on the same plot. Then the Toby moved to where we know it ended up?
