On the 1851 census Joseph Anstey, draper is next door to John Hall hotel keeper who is next to Thomas Barton Shoemaker. Anstey is given as Cross cheaping so that must be the corner. |

Brilliant Anne
In the 1874 directory number 7 Broadgate is William Barton, boot and show maker. 8 H M Jackson, Castle Hotel. 9 Joseph Anstey, draper and silk mercer. Then Cross Cheaping. Sadly the owner of the building on the left of the lithograph had changed. There were no suitable insurance companies listed in 1874 or 1868 but I believe that it would have been number 10. |

Love this pic of a cracking Jaguar Mk.7 (so presuming this is late 50s/early 60s - but what was that building in the background to the right at the time - presumably on Pepper Lane?
You can see it here west of the Golden Cross (so why did it go?) -

I shall enjoy looking through them to see if I can find anything interesting. I have had a quick peek and I can't wait. The trouble is, I am engrossed at the moment in family tree as my daughter had her DNA done for mother's day, so I could look at Roy's side. It has amazingly proved a possible link to a brick wall that we have had for a long time and also made a connection with a lady in Canada, who wrote to me 41 years ago, whose family went to Canada via Ireland. I did my own some time ago and what you find is all very fascinating.
Interestingly, the newspapers had a "Where is it" spot. |

We've had other images of the Tank before but this one comes from CliffB - I think via an Ebay sale - Mrs Morton Corset-Maker was at 19 Broadgate on the 1921 Directory -

I love the way this has captured the driver straining to hear the officer's shouted instructions over the din of the engine. I wonder what spectacle was following this monster, the left half of the crowd are all looking at the next thing in line. |

According to the newspapers it was Tank week in February 1918. It was called Tank Bank and war saving certifacates were being sold.
