I am planning a visit to Coventry in a few weeks time with two Dutch academics who want to write about Coventry's topshops and cottage factories. I know Eli Green's no longer exists and that Cash's does - can anyone tell me if they know of other cottage factories still in existence, and if so where they are? Many thanks, Frances Holliss

These are fantastic Topshops - many thanks - we'll definitely visit these. Were they ever linked to an engine, does anyone know? Or are there other cottage factories still in existence, apart from Cash's?

There are others dotted around. There are a few in Stoke (I lived on Stratford Street that had a block) in an area that was laid out for industry but it never took off and the area was eventually filled with Edwardian terraces. Chapelfields has all the watchmakers houses. There are a few around Earlsdon as well.

frances21. Re the top shops linked to an engine, were in Hillfields, a triangle of three streets (see Prest's 'Industrial Revolution in Coventry'). Eli Green built them, sadly gone for ever! I passed them many times on the 9 bus to Stoke from Hippodrome.

The last top shop in use that I know of was a watch repairers at the top of Allesley Old Road near the Maudsley, If I remember correctly he was at the end of a block and faced Four Pounds Ave. This was in the 1950's
