Fantastic find Dutchman, great photo. My husband remembers Woolworths temporary shop well. He recalls that there was a pub next to the static water tank (but can't remember the name) and next to the hut at the side of the water tank was the entrance to a market. He seems to think that the 'Phoenix Plaque' was laid where the water tank was and was later moved to where it is now. Of course, old age can play funny tricks with your mind. |

You're very welcome Dreamtime but it was actually Baz who found it!

The White Lion. It survived until after the new Marks & Spencers was built the other side of it.

I think the "Levelling Stone" as it's officially known is in the same place as before but its surroundings have changed so much it now looks as if it's in a different place? |

Crikey, Health and Safety would have a field day with this nowadays! We have those 'orrible barriers around water features in the city centre - what would they do with a whole river?! |

Tricia's husband might have a point about the changed location of the stone. I can't find the book I saw it in at the moment, but I recall once reading that the stone was moved from its original position to accommodate the building of the jeweller's under the ramp at the top of the Precinct. I don't think it was moved very far, but I don't believe it started out exactly where it now lies. Maybe someone will be able to dig out some more accurate information for us all?
Cheers, time to watch the match now.... On 19th Jun 2012 3:11pm, tricia said:

The stone was laid there "Where it is shown" in 1946 and the only picture I have of it is when the mayor of Coventry was showing it to an American Ambassador and his wife on the 8th March 1958. It was said to be the point of where the re-building work of Coventry started. Always looking forward to looking at the past.

We are intrigued now. I have found that the stone was raised by 2 feet, ten years after it was laid, to bring it up to the level of the surrounding paved area.
Perhaps that's was Alan remembers.
Good win for England Rob. |

Think these pictures have been on here before of the Sherbourne culvert, however what I am interested in are these images of a bridge that seems to still be standing underground. Anyone have an idea of where it is? Or does anyone even remember this bridge before it was covered over?

The bottom of the culvert is similar to how it used to look under Priory St. This is where it disappeared until it popped back up again in Palmer Lane. Our torches were never powerful enough to walk all the way through so we always bottled out after going round the first bend. Although it is a bridge, could it also be supporting a building above? Is that why it is still intact?
Written on the wall in white looks like CAR PARK with an arrow pointing the way, is that wit or what.

Looking at pictures 8-9, I would say they were taken from the other side of the "bridge". Also, I would say it is part of the original culvert.
You can do better than that MR, unless you're 10ft high?
I'm just a coward.

Fantastic, What a wealth of information on the web site 28 days later. Thanks for sharing.
Its ok MR, you dont need your camera now, all you need is a tape measure to see how far up that "bridge" is? |

What a shame this has not been thought of before. I am sure the frogs in our garden came from the trickle going through Sherbourne fields in the 60's. The children loved playing over there and there were no hidden dangers to worry about, just wet shoes and socks. |
