Having just read about an Italian 'job' beneath Green Lane subway, I am wondering whether there is still access to the Martyrs' Mosaic (the memorial is not far away at Quinton Road) which could be seen on the left hand side beneath the clock tower in Broadgate (top of Hertford Street). When the 'bridge' was filled in and closed to traffic, the subway there was closed off too I expect but I have not remembered when re-visiting Coventry to have a look. It was a wonderful piece of art behind plate glass panels!

Thank you Morgana! Good to have the details re this piece of art. Somewhere I have a postcard of it. If the Telegraph did not not show it perhaps it has been locked away and inaccessible under the Bridge behind the shop beneath the clock. When I find the pc I'll scan and upload it - unless someone beats me to it. Coventry does have some gems, if many of them are sadly lost.

As promised, paying one of my rare visits to Coventry yesterday, I made my way to Broadgate House, next to the newspaper/stationers' in Broadgate beneath the clock tower. I was able to go inside and see the mosaic just as it was when I first saw it protected from vandals with plate glass panels. A wonderful piece of art and commemorating the burning of the Protestants in Mary Tudor's reign in Coventry. Few Coventry people probably know it is there!

Found a colour photo of the Martyrs' mosaic which is below the old subway under Broadgate bridge.
