I seem to recall that when I took the "now" photo for the new & old pairing, I was standing on the lawn in front of Trinity church, a few yards from Priory Row.

More than likely MULCHED, JW. The powers that be most likely already had future plans for relocating Lady G so let all the greenery go to waste. All history now so the taxpayers (I presume) had to pay for all the paving and so forth since. Goodness knows where she will land up at the hands of future generations.

I rarely have the chance to offer up memories that relate on these threads but!... I can recall seeing this statue surrounded by gardens and bushes, actually a lot more bushes than in the photo. I would guess at pre 1980 but can't be sure exactly when. Coventry's planning committee (or whatever it has been called over the decades) have made a lot of awful decisions!

That takes me back, especially the bus stop. Stops like that were all over Coventry. There were two types: the cream coloured one were "by request", which meant the bus would not stop unless you signalled it to do so, and the darker maroon ones were "fare stages", where, I believe, the bus had to stop, whether there was anyone waiting or not. Copsewood is interesting in that it seems to have disappeared as an area of Coventry; well, things do change over time; in Warwick, there used to be the Percy Estate, but now it is always referred to as Spinney Hill. None of the Coventry bus routes mention Copsewood now. I used to see a lot of buses marked Copsewood. I think it was the number 2 (?). They start at 3 now, so it seem numbers 1 and 2 have gone.

Helen, I wish I had your eyes then, I have not seen Coventry since 1974 and maybe that is why I have had trouble in following you all around and the old views are still stuck in my mind. I really should get a grip and appreciate the many changes made. There are many who do not like changes, is that another sign of old age, I don't like to think so. Smile

Slim, think number 9 was Earlsdon-Copsewood. Copsewood as a terminus was really there IMO for the GEC complex. When the city expanded out to Binley, then Ernesford Grange, the buses went further out to Craven Arms, then junction of Willenhall Lane and Binley/Brandon Road + Ernesford Grange I believe - not totally sure but think right.

Spot on Busman. The No 9 in the fifties was Earlsdon-Copsewood. It stopped outside my mum's shop in White St, the stop being right by her shop so she couldn't park there.

Thanks, all. The Copsewood wasn't my bus, but I often saw it. Mine was the no.1. I used to get it as far as the Maudslay pub, then walk home down Four Pounds Avenue. I remember Stoke Heath going the opposite way.
