Hell, I'm showing my age now. Hill Field was still gas lit, every morning and evening a man on his pushbike would stick his pole up and pull the lever to turn the gas mantles on or off. Always fancied that job, thought he only worked for for a short time. Oh for a child's mind.

As for the gas lamps - cor blimey, you must be really ancient.... I mean, really, really ancient !!!!! You're looking pretty good for 150 though!

Hi scrutiny, I lived 64 King Edward Road in the early 50s. We had a gas street light right outside our house, must have been the same person.

Still had gas lamps in Crescent Avenue in 1950. We had gas mantle lighting throughout the house too, at number 1. I remember what a treat it was, when I was three, to be given a lighted taper and lifted up so I could turn on the light! It's amazing that those houses never burnt to the ground!

Mary, Queen of Scots, is brought into Coventry, escorted by 400 troops. Elizabeth had asked for her to be held at Coventry castle, but it was reported to be in too ruinous a state, so Mary was first held at the Bull Inn in Smithford Street, then later in the Mayoresses Parlour in St. Mary's Hall. |

The charter making Coventry into a county (the County of the City of Coventry) was confirmed on this day. The area covered by the county in the 15th century was actually quite similar to the modern day city, taking in the surrounding villages....
Radford, Keresley, Foleshill, Exhall, Ansty, Shilton, Caludon, Wyken, Henly, Wood-end, Stoke, Biggin, Whitley, Pinley, Asthill, Harnell, Horwell & Whoberley, plus parts of Walsgrave-on-Sowe & Styvechale.
.... which now, of course, are mostly sub-districts of the city. |

In Coventry Drill Hall I signed an allegiance to the King, I would lay down my life for him.
Didn't happen - didn't happen for his daughter either (yet).
1940 - I missed the King by a couple of hours in Coventry Cathedral (he was late).
1945 - Stood on the same parade ground as him, he ignored me.
1950's - I was on a coach, along Epsom's Downs road leading to the grandstand. We were held up by a car, back wheel on fire, two or three men stood putting the fire out the way men can. Had a clear view, the car in front of us did too - the car was flying the Royal Pennant, The Queen Mother.
I was staying in a small hotel near Victoria Station. A guy worked in the Palace - he told me the Queen Mother rang her (gay) valet, someone else answered, the Queen Mother said "Tell that old 'Queen' down there, this old Queen up here needs a drink".
