On 6th May 2018 10:34am, Roger Turner said: One of the photos shows an ARP warden in full kit in 1941. He is holding a rattle - presumably to draw attention. I take it he wouldn`t be able to blow a whistle when wearing a gas helmet
On 6th May 2018 3:22pm, Wearethemods said: Yes, Roger, the rattle would have been used to alert people of a gas attack. Fortunately never used of course.

8th May 1344 Queen Isabella granted the land for Bablake church (St. Johns) to be built upon. 8th May 1945 Coventry celebrates VE Day. Rationed food has been saved up to allow for a decent feast.
On 8th May 2018 3:53pm, Kaga simpson said: Rob. VE Day - doesn't mean much to people these days, but put the fear of God into this Coventry Kid at that time that I would now be sent to fight the Japs.
On 8th May 2018 5:34pm, Rob Orland said: Wow, what an excellent point Kaga, I'd not considered that consequence of VE day. All I can say is, thank goodness you made it back to explain it to those of us "youngsters" who appreciate the knowledge and want to understand more.
On 9th May 2018 9:19am, Kaga simpson said: Thank you Rob, there were many Coventry kids out in the far East at that time still in mortal danger for themselves but very glad they could stop worrying about their parents and people back in Cov from any more danger from the sky.

Having said that, two of our most popular large supermarkets have banned all plastic bags now from June, so maybe the jolly old shopping baskets will be in vogue again. Thumbs up

9th May 1940 A Mobile Canteen was presented to the City of Coventry by Mrs. H. H. Harley, wife of the managing director of Coventry Gauge and Tool Co., Ltd, after an idea proposed by Councillor Pearl Hyde.
On 9th May 2018 9:19am, Kaga simpson said: Yes, our Councillor Pearl Hyde did wonders for our city during the war and after - one of the few greats in the City Council that was prepared to roll their sleeves up and serve the people.

11th May 1471 During the War of the Roses Margaret of Anjou and the Prince's new widow, Anne Neville, were brought as prisoners to Coventry and delivered to Edward IV. (There we are again - more rubbing shoulders with royalty - the sort of amazing history that the City of Culture team really should be paying more attention to.)
