On this day Walter J. Harris, secretary of Coventry City Football Club, wrote a long formal letter of application for admission to Division 1 of the Southern League. Coventry hoped to be selected ahead of Exeter and Southend United, and put forward the club's suitability regarding the quality of the ground, geographical location and prosperity and growth of the city.
On 4th Apr 2018 2:24pm, Harrier said:
W.J. Harris wrote for many years for the Midland Daily Telegraph (the forerunner of the Coventry Evening Telegraph) under the pseudonym 'Historian', basically doing what Rob is doing now!!!! He recorded events from the past on a day to day basis but the whole week was published in one dollop.
On 4th Apr 2018 3:47pm, Rob Orland said:
That's excellent Harrier, thank you! I've seen "Historian" credited so many times, but had no idea who he actually was - now, thanks to you, we do know!

The application succeeded, and CCFC moved up from The Birmingham & District League for the start of the 1908/09 season.

A local Journalists' Banquet held on this Saturday discussed the concern that one day broadcasting might supersede printed newspapers, and that 'other media' could be conveying the news. The Minister of Health, however, did not believe it would happen, and that there would always be a demand for intelligent newspapers. ( )

And neither media imagined the rise of the internet.
On 4th Apr 2018 11:46am, Roger Turner said:
Just wondering; I assume they dined local.
Would there be enough local journalists now to fill a taxi to get to the station to go to attend a banquet anywhere?
On 4th Apr 2018 11:58am, Annewiggy said:
They probably could have gone by bus! The 3 day meeting and banquet was held in Leamington Town Hall. They were entertained during the dinner by "The Edna Willoughby trio"

And who paid for it ?
On 4th Apr 2018 3:01pm, Roger Turner said:
Was there ever a "Carry on Journalists" ever made?
I have an image of an open plan charabanc of the day making its itinerant and boozy progress to Royal Leamington Spaaaaaah, the purpose and highlight of the event a 3 day conference hosted by the redoubtable TT (Temperance Tortured) Trio of Edna (lack of) Will (at all) including suitable disastrous interventions by the Pump Room pump that seems to have a mind of its own.
Just dreaming, but Edna Willoughby sounds grim!
