24th Sep 1792 On this day a whole length portrait of George III, by Lawrence, was presented to the City by the Right Hon. Lord Eardley and J. Wilmot, Esq., and placed in St. Mary's Hall - where it can still be seen.

On 24th September 1926, a new wing was opened was opened at Stoke Park School, containing a gymnasium, a chemistry and physics laboratory, a domestic science classroom, library, 5 extra classrooms and a kitchen for the provision of meals for the students.

25th Sep 1853 A violent storm blew down chimneys and parts of many houses, although no fatalities were recorded.

On 25th September 1971, Coventry City beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Highfield Road in front of a crowd of 26,517. Willie Carr scored the goal in a match which saw Ian St John make his debut for Sky Blues Eleven years later, on 25th September 1982, only 9,319 were there to witness a 4-2 win for Sky Blues at home to Everton. City's goals came from a Jim Melrose hat-trick and one from Steve Hunt

26th Sep 1940 Coventry's first daylight raid of WW2 by a single bomber, which hit the paint-shop of the Standard Motor Works at Canley. 26th Sep 1941 Winston Churchill and his wife Clemmie visited Coventry. He waved to the cheering crowds of Home Guard and morning shoppers all the way from the station to Broadgate and gave the famous V sign.

On 26th September 1998 Jimmy Hill returned to Coventry to visit a bookshop in the city centre. Crowds gathered at Waterstones (formerly Dillons) to catch a glimpse of the former Sky Blues manager who was signing copies of his autobiography "The Jimmy Hill Story". Earlier that year, Jimmy had left the BBC to take up a new job with Sky TV at the age of 70. [Source: John McSparron's Coventry News]

27th Sep 1978 Comedian Dave Allen came to play Coventry Theatre for 3 nights, and was quoted as saying 'if God has no sense of humour, I'm in trouble'!

28th Sep 1918 Private Henry Tandey won the Victoria Cross for his brave action on this day: During a counter-attack his platoon was stopped by machine-gun fire. Tandey located the gun position, and with a Lewis gun team, silenced it. Reaching the canal crossing, he restored the plank bridge under heavy fire. In the evening he and eight comrades were surrounded by an overwhelming number of the enemy. Tandey led a bayonet charge, fighting so fiercely that 37 of the enemy were driven into the hands of the remainder of his company. Although twice wounded, Tandey refused to leave until the fight was won, eventually going into hospital for the third time on 4 October 1918. (From Wiki.)
