Home Guard (Local Defence Volunteers)

Hi artful. My father was also an inspector at Herbert's and they wouldn't release him either, so he joined the Herbert's section of the Home Guard (I have a photo of his section somewhere!). And here it is!! I believe this superb photo was taken around 1942 - my father (Norman) is on the extreme left of the photo (as we look). Anyone recognise any other member of this platoon? This photo was kindly sent to me after it appeared in the Coventry Telegraph. I contacted the owner whose own father is also in the photo. I have subsequently lost their details, If they recognise it - please get in touch!

My granddad is in this photo, back right, Harold Harper (Gauge and Tool, Home Guard, Lewis Machine Gun Section, 3rd May 1941).

I am not sure if this is in the right thread but was unsure where else to put it, so here goes. I was quite annoyed the other morning when watching a newspaper review on Sky News on various items and the man who had picked out the item on the imminent release of the film "Dad's Army" did nothing but pour scorn on it and said no-one would be interested in going to see it. He was in his forties so I doubt whether he had ever watched an episode in his life! My mother used to watch every episode and we could hear her laughing away. I have watched several quite recently and found some of them extremely amusing. Just simple, clean fun. It makes me sad that if there is no violence, sex or bad language younger people are just not interested. We saw the trailer to the film and we all decided we would go and see it; although it is a remake the present cast bear an extremely remarkable resemblance to the previous cast who, apart from Ian Lavender, have sadly all passed away.

Well said Janey, it`s route one for me if it is on!. There was the "unmentionable" though wasn`t "Stupid Boy`s" mum getting up to a bit of "asyerfaather" with "Uncle Arthur"?

That's true, but at least we didn't have to watch it !!

Janey, re Dads Army, lots of the early sketches were true but twisted for fun. My dad joined the Home Guard (LDV) right at the beginning, came home one night. Dad: Frankie Potts turned up tonight with his double-barrelled 12 bore shot gun Mum: Well he would wouldn't he Dad: What?, Mum: Frankie Potts, he needs two barrels Dad: What you on about? Mum: Well everyone knows he's cross-eyed. Billy Reedy also joined, few weeks on, trying to explain to his mother: Our sergeant said we should treat our rifles like our mothers Mrs Reedy stout, curlers and pinny: Well you tell your sergeant he has another think coming, anyone tries to throw me over his shoulder and he'll get a bl**dy black eye.

I believe that the Home Guard was first called the LDV but the name was changed because everyone called them "look duck and vanish".
