Am I right in thinking Fairfax Street was only built in the late 1950's? |

On Rob's street maps, Fairfax St is not on the 1851 map but is on the 1869 map.
Sorry, brain gone, forgot they moved it, 60s it is. That area was a right mud bath in 1967 as they built the De Vere hotel. I took a short cut through the foundations they were putting in on my wedding day, got some right queer looks from the workers but did not want to be late. |

I does look like it was built in the 1960s not the 1950s. It put a lid on the Sherbourne. |

It is not on the 1962 map but is on the 1969 one. When going to the Ford St art school I used to park in a temporary carpark on Fairfax St (memory coming back). That was 1965/6 so that narrows it down a bit, 62 to 65. |

I loved racing down that round and round entrance to that car park! Note this is pre DeVere Hotel -

Just going back to my original post at the start of this thread - the brick building was recently discussed on an Old Coventry FB page and a friend of mine stated -
It was a pump house for the original Fairfax st baths and dated from the 19th century.
I had not thought of that - presume he means Priory Street. |

BFA proving invaluable once again. 1953 - the brick building circled to the left looks certainly like it could have been part of the baths at one time although on a 1950 map it is labelled as an electricity sub-station so perhaps a change of use once the baths were out of action. Note the old cafe on the right which gives us a better idea of the location given that was there right in to the 80's - that made me realise the baths were further north on Priory Street than I had originally realised.

Thanks to my friend Paul Michael Kennelly - before Priory Halls and the De Vere ruined the Cathedral view!

My friend Dean Nelson has this one - what I think is what must have been a fairly new at the time Fairfax St. It was a charity pull to raise funds for Aberfan apparently. A Fiat 600 was a good choice as they only weighed about 600kg! Anyway just curious about that row of buildings to the right - were they on New Buildings? My maps of the era show that area had cleared by then.

Factory on Old Maps
I think that it's the canteen to the factory that stood where the car park is in the photo. It was at the end of New Buildings, running along Hill Top. |

Are you sure about that date? I would place it in the sixties, not the fifties. As far as my memory goes that side of Pool Meadow was all pools of water and rough ground, and the bookstall was still there? |
