Coventry Pubs

Apologies if this one has been seen elsewhere.Courtesy of the "Coventry pub's and clubs from back in the day" FB page. St Johns just glimpsed in the background for those not of that era who are trying to work out where this was (probably somewhere within the Lower Precinct!) What is that vehicle?!

"AMR"? (Above the doorway) In every other picture I've seen of the pub it's branded "Mitchells & Butlers"

AMB - Atkinsons, Mitchells and Butlers?

Ansells Mitchell's & Butler..?..

AMB was/is an American brewery but did have a couple of breweries in Europe pre war.. May still have for all I know, nobody tells me anything...

The American AMB is "Appalachian Mountain Brewery" and has no connection with either Ansells or M&B, both of which were founded in Birmingham in the 19th century.

Ansells was never connected with M&B - but M&B took over Atkinsons in 1959

Yes but that photograph looks pre 1959 to me.

Very true but the pub also closed in 1959 and I think it highly unlikely it would have been repainted immediately before closure.

There was a tunnel leading up to the Leofric between Owen Owens and a pub on the right, in the fifties, anyone tell me the name of pub please, holds a very sad story for me.

Was that the Leofric? I worked there a couple of times.
