The Horse and Jockey was a pub on the Tamworth road just on outskirts of Keresley and Corley, back in 1950 it was managed by Mavis and Arthur Socket, he was a soccer player for Coventry City, the comedian Reginald Dixon used to drink there and played the odd game of darts, I was only a teenager, used to drink the odd brown and mild and played darts along with my dad.

It's still there! I held my 50th birthday party there in 2004, when it had a lovely garden with lots to do for the kids. Now, it seems to use the land at the back for storage.

I spent many a day and night in that pub, Anne, my sister used to work there, my little ones I used to put in the games room, carrycot and all, that's where Eric Patty the scrap man used to drink, his local, do you recall him or his sons Eric and Joe, it's got new owners again now. Not sure if it's the same as Dutchman and Dreamtime is on about through.

I used to think it was on the Fletchamstead Highway. Obviously I am wrong, which pub was that then on the highway, and it has been converted into something. Sorry, at this time of night I am too lazy to refer back. Oh, it has just come to me - The Fletch!!! Night, Dutchman Wave

The Horse and Jockey. This pub rang its last last orders in 1959, and was taken down in 1962. Records show that there was a pub on the site before1756, and it is said that it may have been called the Horse and Groom. Thumbs up
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

The Tollgate, Holyhead Road Is it Art Deco? Does anyone know its history?

All I could find though, yes it's Art Deco and was built in the 30's in the typical style of the era. I was brought up in Earlsdon and Allesley Park and spent many an evening on pop'n'crisps on the benches outside with mum and dad, having walked over the Park. Tommy Hutchison was always in there after the match!

You mean the pub? Yes

Built in the late 1930s apparently. It's listed by the council as being of local historical interest.

I well remember the benches Neil in the front of the Tollgate, my pop & crisps were devoured there too and many years later my children did exactly the same thing. It's a shame they knocked it about inside for the sake of the eateries in the 70's as was the norm for the pubs in those days. The same thing happened to The Three Spires, that one had a bowling green at the back. Now all you see are signs outside advertising the menus. Cheers

Big grin The Spires was the first boozer I ordered a drink at Dream. I've always been tall for my age Happy It got a bit manic there in the early 80's and agree they ruined the interior in that place. The walk-around bar was great and I do recall the bowling green. They have car washing in the car park nowadays! Oh my

The Tollgate used to have a beautiful 3D pub sign outside - a model of an historical tollgate. I don't suppose anyone knows what happened to it?

I vaguely remember that sign, perhaps somebody offered the right price for it, Charabanc. There are some beautiful pub signs all over the country. Is there a name for someone who collects pub signs? The one in question, was it white with a cross bar across it? Just looked at The New Spires and I like the look of the Tollgate best. I see the benches are still outside. Cheers
