I had completely forgotten about Spicers. My dad bought our first television (a 9 inch Murphy) from them in 1952. |

There was one with the 'Coventry Cross' pub on, was that the Cross Cheaping pub in the John Ashby book? Loads of backdrops of places I would love to know more about, factories and stuff, we were pretty good at the 'back of the shops and round the market' stuff. We recognised the back of the Co-op where some of the staff parked. Must bring back loads of memories, I liked the magazine kiosk at the railway. |

I guessed it was the junction of Queen's Road, Queen Victoria Road and Warwick Row but I checked with Old-Maps.co.uk just to be sure:
1905 map
The Starley Memorial is just visible top-centre in front of the trees. Stoneleigh Terrace is bottom-left. The Rudge-Whitworth (GEC) building towers in the background top-left.

I found this lovely print of Queen Victoria's Visit to Birmingham 1858 which passes by Coventry. I have never seen it before and not sure where this bridge is. Hope it is in the right spot, didn't know whether it should be with the trains. It's great when you click on it to zoom in. And there are others to view. Shift me somewhere else please if this isn't the best spot for it.

That's the bridge over Warwick Road with the original station building behind it which later became the station-master's office.

Am I correct in assuming that the sports field on the left of the print put on by Foxcote is the Bull Fields, one of the two main areas used for sport before activities moved across the road to the cricket ground where the cycle track was built and the Butts Park Arena now stands? |

There's a huge amount of artistic licence in the drawing. I *think* the Bull Fields was much further to the left in real life, out of view? The Railway Hotel - conspicuous by its absence - had already been built by the time the drawing was made and the bridge was much wider than drawn.
I think I posted a view from the other side somewhere which showed the area to the immediate west of Warwick Road as still being farmland.
