I know Rob & Dutchman may be able to put my mind at rest about the Cross of Nails I saw in 1962. It was standing where the wooden cross stands today in the old Cathedral, someone had gathered all the roof nails and welded them together to make a big cross but the only cross of nails I can find anything about is the small one made out of three roof nails. Did anyone ever see this cross in the 60s or better still has anyone got a photo of it, or am I dreaming? Sad

The wooden cross and the "three nails" version are the only two I've heard of, Dougie. A replica of the wooden cross now stands in the old cathedral ruins, and the original is kept on the stairs linking the Cathedral with St. Michael's Hall. The "three nails" cross now rests on the altar in the new cathedral. Now I've said that, stand back for the stampede to prove me wrong! Big grin

Thanks to you both for replying to an old man that lives over 100 miles away from Coventry trying to tell you about something that may never been there or has no history, I can't be the only one that's seen the cross of nails that I'm talking about Smile that's if it ever existed. Blush Sad All I can say is, why has it stuck with me all these years? I'm sorry but it wasn't a wooden cross I saw the first time I came down to Coventry. Come on, see if there's someone out there that can confirm this for me.

Hi Dutchman, you always try to help everyone. I've looked again this morning at your post, Smile I will have to accept that it must have been a dream from years ago Blush or history is wrong and I don't think it is. Thumbs up I did Google Cross of Nails but this is the site link.

Sorry Dougie, I should have read the text accompanying Rob's picture more carefully! Blush

I've recently returned from a holiday during which I visited the beautiful German city of Dresden, twinned with Coventry and now so wonderfully restored after complete destruction in 1945. In the rebuilt Frauenkirche (the equivalent of St Paul's to Dresden), a Coventry Cross of Nails is on the altar, and on YouTube a shortened version of the Consecration of the Church shows the Cross of Nails being placed there.
