Broadgate - 31st December 1987. Zales visible in the background!
OddSock: Particularly interested in the family surnames Cowley, Shale, & Pratt in Coventry!

The pic ties in well with the one posted by Neil. One of these days I'll truly pinpoint that well. I saw this view for the first time in 91. Only Godiva remained and she was under the big tent. I'd get off the bus from the station and walk down the hill to catch the 20 or the 20A to Foleshill.

I remember what was probably one of the most important spots in the city during the 60's. Meeting outside Burton's. Definitely the in-crowd spot.

The only place to meet, Friday night off to the Market Tavern and then to the Locarno!

I remember seeing a few fights in the Market Tavern, probably not prior to a Locarno visit as the young men were very sharp dressers. I loved going to the Locarno, from the Saturday morning sessions to the more grown up evenings.

Burton's was the meeting place for the West Indians and just along towards the Leofric main entrance was Manfield's shoe shop which was the meeting place for mods and later the skinheads. The CET reported in May 1964 (just after the Brighton and other South Coast resort skirmishes) that a 'major incident' (as described by the Asst. Chief Constable) occurred in Broadgate involving about 100 youths! This incident in which a number of youths had been arrested in the vicinity of the Locarno and Precinct occurred late on the Friday night. Previously the front page of the CET on Monday May 18th reported the headline "Teenage Groups in Brighton Clashes". Maybe a forum member can reproduce the articles from the newspaper on here. Thumbs up

Another great one OddSock Thumbs up I do remember the well Helen and when it was all like that. IIRC the shop to the left of the ramp was Colliers around that time.

Hi Lindatee Until old enough to pass for 18 in the pubs, it was definitely "under the elephant" for me.

Burtons started out making uniforms in the First World War, but not in Coventry.

This super image has recently been unearthed from the Telegraph (I think) - can't remember who found it, Cliff, can you? It a rare view looking north over Broadgate towards Trinity Street as it includes that very short-lived Pru building to the right - a real mix of old and new, though both old and new in this image were soon to be destroyed and they had to start all over again. Must be one of the last images of trams in operation as well.
