I would have thought that there were not many cars around in the days these pubs were built. I think The Grange had a green many years ago, it had a massive garden which had a toilet block and covered seating area, but that was an Ansells pub Cheers
The Bell in Tile Hill village certainly had one years ago, I remember a little pavilion on the right of it. As you say, now a big car park.

In actual fact when I was a youngster attending Ravensdale School, I remember a pub being built on a piece of waste ground that me and my pals used to play on, namely The Painted Lady on Longfellow Road. I guess this must have been around 1965/66. Cheers
Dont forget the Standard in Eastern Green and the Hawthorn on Broad Lane. Both gone and houses built on the land.

My band played at The Courthouse about a year before it closed. The memorable thing about the occasion was afterwards as we packed our cars, the bride from the wedding party in the upstairs function room was just being arrested in the car park. Evidently she'd taken a swing at the barman - and connected. The police were reluctant to take her away on her wedding day - and in her bridal gown - and tried everything to calm her down. It didn't work. She punched the PC. We played again a couple of months later but it never happened again.....

I have a feeling there used to be a bowling green behind the William IV on the Foleshill Road. I seem to recall it fell out of use, and at one time it was used to stage summer six-a-side football tournaments. At some stage it was then covered in tarmac to become an overspill car park in the days when 'Pele' Bains ran the place as Coventry's first (and best) curry pub.

What are the oldest public houses in Coventry (city centre area and suburbs) that are still used as pubs and roughly how old are they?

Question

Hi Foxcote I`ve only just read this topic. I`ve looked up the Star and Raven on the Real Ale Rambles site which does list its address as Smithford Street and lists the licensee in 1835 as Richard Redgrave Cheers

Thanks mickw Thumbs up I had forgotten about Mr. Grimes and the Star and Raven! I have just re-read the lot and quite a tale unfolded, it had the lot didn't it! The plot would have made a good novel, magic old pubs, his private life, reading the links there was the shock of the will concerning dubious marriages and the voyage to America. I wish all the sleuthing I do would turn out as exciting as that! A death was noted in the newspaper archive, James Redgrave, second son of Richard Redgrave of the Star and Raven, July 1834. The son was only 15 years of age. Sad times at the pub. Thanks again Wave
