40+ years ago I used to go the New Inn, near Binley Road, for a decent pint or two, then 100 yards to the trendy Bulls Head where the drink was awful. Then on the bus to town and on to The Lady Godiva (Dive Bar) and the Golden Cross (The Cross). Happy days for the most part. |

It was being refitted when I passed it the other day. What as I couldn't say?

I can't help wondering why they would name a public house The Admiral Lord Rodney in Coventry.
Is there any connection at all ? |

There were also Admiral Hawke and Admiral Lord Codrington!
Then again there were Generals Blakeney, Havelock, Lee and Wolfe, Lord Nelson, plus Green Man and The Swan with two necks
So I don't think there has to be a direct connection

Has anyone got a picture of The Green Man Hotel in Much Park Street? If not, any ideas what the style of the building might have been (pre WW1)? |

You're not the first person to wonder about the naval connection Dreamtime
There was also - within easy walking distance - the Hope & Anchor, the Royal Oak, the Mermaid and the Anchorsmith, all naval references. There was even a seaman's club close to the Rodney.
It's possible that the area was at one time a favourite drinking rendezvous for seamen home on leave in Coventry?

There's a planning application to convert the Gosford Park Hotel (Stoke) into apartments... I had a look on Google Street view, and it looks like a typical Edwardian neighbourhood pub. |

While in Smith Street this morning I took this photograph, assuming it to have been a public house in a previous life
Sure enough, it used to be The Golden Horse |

Terry Downes the ex-World Champion boxer used to drink in The Thistle, he used to be dropped off by his driver in his Rolls Royce. I met him in The Bell in Keresley in the early 90s, he was a mate of John Thomas, the landlord at the time - he loved coming to Coventry |

Saturday nights usually consisted of meeting at the Golden Cross and setting light to a mate's copy of The Pink whilst he was reading it! Onward then to The Bear in High Street where they had unpleasant bouncers manning the disco. A couple in the Penny Black, then finally The Three Tuns....
That sounds remarkably similar to my Saturday nights Beesman - though I was on quite good terms with the bouncers at The Bear, the manager was a nasty piece of work as I recall - I believe one of the bouncers was Rob Townsend (I am truly bad with people's names, but it was definitely Rob someone).
Ah - Nello's, many a wasted night spent there, the alternative night spot, they wouldn't let you in if you were wearing a tie.
We would usually go to the Dog and Trumpet or possibly to back to Waters on the High Street if we had our ladies with us. |

Hi
My first time on here. Although I'm a Sheffielder my grandmothers ancestors were from the Coventry area and many relatives still are. My mums cousin used to keep the Shakespeare pub on Spon Street and I remember visiting in the 1950's. I spent a couple of days in Coventry last year doing some family research and was quite shocked at the Shakespeare as it is now. Many of my ancestors lived in Spon Street and Much Park Street so I'm very interested in Coventry's history. I felt I had 'come home' when I visited. The earliest family member I've found was born in Allesley in c1690 so I'm getting there.
