Good morning all, I have just been along my old haunt, the Holyhead Road, passed the Holyhead pub, what a great place that still looks, and noticed all the houses are painted white. Is that the norm now in Coventry, white exteriors? It does look nice and fresh and a nice road to live in, and you are nearly in the country. Wave

Good evening Dreamtime. I 'visited' the Holyhead Road myself the other week and was discussing it only yesterday! All I remember was the playing field diagonally opposite the Holyhead pub (always a thriving establishment packed to the gunnels most nights) the path leading through the alotments and the 'Chain Gardens' and of course the Alvis. So different now as was apparent during my recent 'visit'. What a wonderful tool the google streetview is.

Yes, it's 7.12 pm here, and I am here reading Philips weather and all the rest of the local gos., and thoroughly enjoying it. It was always Four Pounds Avenue in my day, and those dark Chain Gardens alongside the Alvis Club. I too recall the playing fields. Also Morris's the newsagents and the bomb site alongside. I forgot to look for Lammas Road is that still there? I wish they would bring the google streetviews up to date! Have a lovely afternoon everyone. Wave

The only thing that I can remember about the General Wolfe dates back to when I think I was in my teens (I am 74 now)... they hit the headlines of the national press by displaying a chalk-board outside with the words 'NO BLACKS' boldly written on it. Oh my

I've just read through this thread and can't believe the number of pubs that I used to frequent that have closed down. Having spent three years at Coventry Technical College, the Fob Watch was a regular haunt, both lunchtimes and evenings. My local was the Open Arms on the corner of Dillotford Avenue and Daventry Road in Styvechale and I know that's still there as I drove past a couple of weeks ago. The Baginton Oak was a regular haunt of mine in the late eighties / early nineties until they decided to turn it into a family friendly pub. When my wife and I were courting twenty years ago, I used to regularly take her to the 'Old Mill' in Baginton. She's a Nuneaton lass, so she thought Baginton was very upmarket Smile

I have been in Canada for a long time now. What happened to create the demise of so many wonderful gathering places ? I am sure that drinking and not driving has played a role (albeit a positive one) but why are so many places closed down ? I see the Rocket by the railway station is boarded up, it was just down from my school and we had many a good time in there. Anybody got some input ? Thanks, Nick D

Many found that there was more profit in food as opposed to booze, so they concentrated on that side more than the old pub style business; the smoking ban had a dramatic effect; booze is so cheap in shops and supermarkets I think the Rocket is open again!
