I remember one landlord that kept it when it was the Summerland tavern and the man was Johhny Herbert, who I believe now keeps the Hastings in Clay lane and formerly kept the Coombe pub in Earlsdon
Absolutely spot on, John does keep the Hastings now. VERY good darts player and an incredible pool player. I heard he was unwell, hopefully he is now feeling better. I used to play darts in the the Summerland when I was a young lad. I was taking a college course and used to pop over to the pub in the lunch hour. That was over 40 years ago and I'm still playing darts and drinking. Some habits just never die do they? |

I seem to recall back in the 1970's a guy, who's name escapes me, attempting to drink something like 60 pints of Guinness in an hour! I'm sure this took place in one of the pubs on the outskirts of Coventry, maybe the Ryton Bridge Hotel, or somewhere like that. It was advertised in the Coventry Evening Telegraph and people paid an admission fee to go and watch. Why on earth anyone would pay to watch someone drink a pint of Guinness then throw it up into a bucket and repeat the feat another 55 or so times is beyond me! I just wondered if any other forum members could recollect this 'event.' |

My dad made a comment at the time about how many buckets he reckoned would be needed but it was nothing I could repeat here!

On the subject of pubs, could anyone tell me where the 'Horse and Jockey' is/was? I have looked but cannot find it listed anywhere.

Hello Dreamtime
It was on the corner of Much Park St and St John Street and closed in 1959 for the building of Ringway St John but wasn't demolished until 1962.

Thanks for that Dutchman, you always come up with the goodies.
It was always mentioned years ago as my mother used to play darts there often.

Opposite Bennetts Insurance was The White Lion, at the back of the Leofric hotel - upstairs was famous for its jazz and blues club |

Hi all
I played piano there a few times as well as front of house in the Leofric. Maybe that is why it closed.
ps. That was thirty years or so ago! |

Thanks for the info Dutchman, according to my info the pub/bar was in the building that accomadates Bennetts insurance on the side of said building and this was approx 1972-3
The Mercia was opened in 1967. It was located mainly in West Orchard but was connected by a long passage way to a narrow entrance in Cross Cheaping.
It was later known as, "Nobby's Place", "Cask & Bottle" and "Bar Zest".
The building is now "Barcode" Afro-Caribbean hair stylists.
