Around 1850 time it was kept by a D Claridge, not far from the sewage farm and Swifts mill. It is stated that several small contractors went broke trying to build the London Bridge, in the end the London NW completed it after the bank slipped killing several people. |

Just learnt that The Squirrel in Greyfriars Lane has reopened.
Great news, loved that pub and lots of happy memories from my time working next door at Greyfriars/Leofric telephone exchange.
Good luck to the new owners.
Will be checking it out next time I go home. |

My uncle Jim died from a heart attack in the Heath on a Sunday dinner time session. He used to live in Beresford Ave and I believe the pub was at the junction with the Foleshill Rd

In local football in the 60's & 70's you got fined by the league for getting your name taken or for getting sent off. No red and yellow cards in those days.
I think my biggest fine was £3.00

I lived on Charter Ave when the Half Sovereign was built and always remember my dad commenting on a pub being built between 2 churches.
I also think that the Half Sovereign was one of the first pubs in Coventry to sell draught lager. Harp at 3/6 a pint in nice handled glasses.
