I don't know. The connections I've found were either to a pond, which may have been an obvious connection to rushes but the others relate to collieries. So I'm stumped.

Probably somewhere the rushes grow, perhaps poorly drained soil that created a pit. Rushes were commonly used in weaving baskets and also for spreading on floors. I would guess that the ones near pits were used to make baskets to carry the coal. There used to be a lot of basket makers in Fazeley, Tamworth and I would guess a lot of them were used on the canals to carry goods.
