What a great photo. I think I used to get the bus to my grandma's house in Willenhall from here. After that, it was from Pool Meadow. Coventry Transport seemed to move the bus stops fairly regularly. |

Sorry if this has already been asked - reading the newspaper from 1947 - Burton's basement (which was the basement of the City Hotel Coaching House) apparently was used as a 6000 gallon water tank to service the Broadgate garden roundabout. The runoff from the temporary shops was fed to the tank via a drain under the road. Does anyone know if the tank is still there? Is that the reason why Broadgate is missing a tree?
Also, the paper says - during the demolition of Burtons / Willsons a large stone block wall was encountered under the road way which was soon covered up... (that's all it says). This is an important place for Coventry - being the crossroads between High Street, Broadgate and Smithford Street. Question http://www.coventryrebuilt.com/

Burtons started out making uniforms in the First World War, but not in Coventry.
Hi Kaga - not sure if Burton's made army uniforms in WWI. They were manufacturing clothing in Leeds by 1913 so they could well have done so. |

A couple of nice tram pictures I just ordered, with the backdrop of Broadgate before and after they demolished Butcher Row. In the second photo it looks like they had started demolishing the buildings that were to be replaced by the Prudential building.

Helen, just behind your tram pictures and in front of the Pru was where they sold the pottery and earthenware before the start of Butcher Row. |

Back in March last year a new member named "harlechjoe" wrote this post about his planned bicycle ride to retrace the route of "The Wonder" stagecoach. He has now completed that ride, and you can read his story here. |
