I always thought she bent her head to the church in those far off distant religious times.

As a child I remember Broadgate from the early 80's up to the 90's. In the right corner (near Owen Owen) I remember the buses driving over the cobblestones. I knew even then that this was not new. I loved the sound and look. Question I have is, were they from the original Broadgate? The area has changed so much over the decades, were they a sixties attempt at the old days?

It depends where the cobbles were Gumnut. It took me ages to notice that the east side of modern Broadgate wasn't where it had been before the war. An entire depth of buildings was turned into road. It was obvious that the west side was built over what had been buildings. The original pavement was just to the west of Lady Godiva. See Britain From Above below and Old Maps. Usual suggestion to zoom in or out as appropriate. New Broadgate Old Broadgate Old Maps of Broadgate

Like Helen says the buildings on the west side of old Broadgate in relation to today were more or less along the line of where the Cathedral Lanes tent was so the cobbles where the buses sat that I remember in the 70's/80's were almost certainly moved there. The NW corner of 'new' Broadgate where the entrance to The Leofric was was pre-war in Market Place!

On 8th Jun 2010 8:31pm, Rob Orland said: Taken by our friend Brian (bkrowstron) in 1980, this lovely view of Broadgate must bring back nostalgic memories for many of us. Certainly my first memory of "town" was here - specifically having a cup of tea and a chocolate cup cake in Lyon's tea shop in the temporary buildings there - probably late 1960s when I was about 4. Those shops were no longer there when this picture was taken (they went in 1974), but it was still a nice place to be, and I just had to share Brian's photo with everyone in the hope that it would provoke some more memories. Oh my, indeed! Wouldn't it be lovely to have some greenery back there again - a colour our eyes all yearn for. I can see how the paved space in Broadgate has proved useful, but there's still plenty of space for, perhaps, a small garden around our Lady Godiva. The contrast above, however, is quite shocking.

Looking at the picture front on. I assume the block on the right is taken up by the Leofric? Remembering the shops on ground level of the left hand block, are the 4 levels above the shops residential?
