Lovely Prof. Whatever they found wrong with that I will never know. OK you can all call me old fashioned if you wish but I reckon Lady G enjoyed sitting in that position too.

My elder brother who had been a photographer in the RAF (it was one of his hobbies from teenage) took a photo exactly like this of the square in its pristine condition. If you look closely at the model of Godiva it is not the real thing as the details of the new statue had not then been revealed. I gave one of these originals to David McGrory so perhaps that's how it found its way to Cornucopia?

I passed this on to Rob on FB but worth sharing here - 1974 and interesting as it shows the clearance of the temporary shops which revealed cellars of old below. I think this was also when Broadgate stopped being an island to drive around. There were excavations in Broadgate 1974/75. The gap between the temporary shops and... Was that when they landscaped it?

There are a fair number of largish bushes and trees, even in the Precinct. I wonder if there was a bit of redistribution? That would explain why the landscaping looked so well established in later photos?

I think this one was not long after all the work was done including to stop Broadgate island becoming an island. You can just see the well too - I hadn't really noticed the 'Broadgate House' sign before either. I noticed this particular photo of Broadgate posted on one of the Coventry related Facebook groups and the person who posted the photo on there dated it as being taken in August 1975. It was actually in the following month towards the end of September (26th I think it was?) that the road in front of where the temporary shops once stood, was closed off to traffic for good and Broadgate was sadly an island no more!!!! (a similar thing happened a number of years back now in London's Trafalgar Square, as one side of that was closed off to all traffic and became pedestrianized!). On 3rd Mar 2020 1:11am, harlechjoe said: Dear Forum Members, In the 19th century a stagecoach known as The Wonder travelled from Shrewsbury to London with staging posts to change its team of horses at an average interval of 10 miles that varied according to the horse power needed between each stage. At the beginning of July I am planning a bicycle ride to retrace the route of this stagecoach and my reason for writing is to ask members if they have knowledge of the coaching inn it may have stopped at in the Broadgate area of Coventry. I am aware that 3 coaching inns were located here. Does anyone know which one was the staging post for The Wonder and is there an archived photograph of that coaching inn? Thank you for reading my appeal - Joe
Just to let you all know, Joe has now completed the first part of his stagecoach journey, and has supplied this link to his page describing his exploits. Thumbs up

What a most interesting man, well put. He must watch the father and son names of Darwin and Dickens, they do get mixed up so, but good luck to his very interesting ride.

Yes, interesting read as I've followed the road from Holyhead to Coventry and they would have to dismount the coach a good few times and walk up those big hills.
