Broadgate

Proof if ever needed that it really was mucked up once more.

Following the earlier posts from Anne and Helen about the 'new' Prudential building on the corner of Spicerstoke and Broadgate - here's a rare image thanks to Debbie Dean Nelson of the bombed out frame. It can only have stood completed for little over 12 months.

Can anyone imagine Broadgate as bare as this on a Saturday lunchtime 50/60 years ago?

A good one Pix, showing a wide span and I have never see Lady G. looking so green before and not the Saturday humdrum I remember.

Is this the same tram hut from different viewpoints?

Osmiroid, no it's not the same shelter, I think the dates are different too.

I have marked on a map where the one in the first picture is: Also Kaga, do you know what is written on the first floor window of Royal Vaults, looks like "something Room" or "something Food"?

Osmiroid, could it be "Smoke room"?

After looking at the map that you nicely annotated, I think it must be the same shelter - or at least a nearly identical one built on the same location - because the second photograph clearly shows the shelter at the bend in the rails, which perfectly matches your map.

Thanks, I thought it was but didn't state it as definite in case I made a massive blunder. Then when I got that map piece it looks like a match, and very noticably the way the corner of Hertford Street sticks out compared to the edge of Broadgate, turning the map the other way up helps as well. p.s. Notice in the first picture, 1935/6, what seems to be a very modern looking litter bin on the lampost/tramwire post.

Rob, doesn't the boarding on the shelter look different? The distance looks wrong to me, I thought the Vault was about six shops down from the High Street?

Both have the same style roof with a pointed object on top, both have a lampost at the open end. The definite differences in decor are from different viewpoints.

One has a keep left sign, but not the other.
