There was an article in the Telegraph many years ago written by a female inmate of an orphanage in Hill Street around that time. She didn't specify it as being a girls-only home. The orphanage was destroyed by bombs in 1940 and she was among the first to celebrate.

According to the 1912 Spennell's Directory of Coventry there was a children's home at 66 Hill Street (part of Highbury Terrace), between Gas Street and Abbotts Lane.

Thank for you for reply My latest information, the orphanage was for girls and had accommodation for 58 children in the 1920s. The Whitley House for boys had accommodation for 39 children

The Boys' Home used to be the Royal Oak pub on London Road. It was then called Plemont Villa. My great grandparents John and Clara Owen were appointed guardians for the home. I'm not sure of the dates they were there but my nan Marjorie was born there when they lived there and that was April 1909.

Does anyone have a picture of the Hill Street Children's Home or know anything about it. I have just found that my Dad went in there in 1927 from the Workhouse. I wonder which primary school the children who lived in the home would have attended. Thank You

A former resident of the home who wrote an article in the Evening Telegraph says she attended Spon Street School.

I don't known its name Tilly but I have an A to Z of Coventry from the early 70s and just off Harold Road is a building called the "Children's Receiving Home". On a more recent map (15 years ago) it is listed as a children's home but again no name.

Thanks for your response Old Lincolnian. I haven't found anything about the Harold Road children's home but have found a former one called 'Stoke House' in Binley Road.

If you type "Children's home" into the search box in the top left hand corner, it will lead you to four threads on the forum, this one and three existing ones on the subject Note: it's "home" not "homes" or you won't get them all Oh my

I have two for your collection. Hill Street Girls home stood on the corner of Abbots Lane and a Boys home at Whitley close to the London Road Cemetery
