The T.A. centre was opened in Green's rd about 1954 and was used by both the 9th Medium W/S R.E.M.E who moved from Quinton Rd, and also the Airborne who I believed moved from Binley. Tuesday night was drill night for the R.E.M.E and we were paid 3/. a week bus fare. There was a Sergeants mess and also an O.R.s canteen. Both opened as the training(?) session ended and closed when the last man went home. There was also a large drill hall marked out as a badminton court. At the back of the main building were the R.E.M.E. workshops with Johny Cant, my good friend, as permanent staff .Great times...

My brother, Geoff Woodford, used this barracks as a T A member in the late 50's/early 60's. We lived in Keresley End at the time. I remember going to a party there, as a little girl, and meeting some of the Sky Blues players.

I am sure I went there in the 60's and I have no idea why but I went somewhere in Keresley to an indoor rifle range and was taught how to fure a 2.2 rifle. I was quite good at it as well. Big grin

I was at primary school with a girl whose father was based at the barracks, being aged 5 at the time I don't remember anything else about him, can't even remember the girls name. Blush Blush Blush This was at Springfield Primary next door to the Coronation Club.

In the 1970's I had an older acquaintance who was in the TA at Greens Rd. Sadly I can't ask him about it now because he passed away a year or so back. I do recall going to a couple of evening events there, one was a New Year's Eve social, probably 1975. From what I recall there was a bar and the bigger events were held in the drill hall. In 1977 the TA centre was the base for a unit of Royal Marines who came to the city with their Green Goddess fire engines when there was a national strike by the fire brigades. I was told that the marines were sleeping on camp beds in the drill hall and their fire engines were in the yard which had a big high fence around it - remember this was a time when the country was very alert to possible terrorist attacks by the IRA and others.

I went to the TA centre on the 1st December 1977 and photographed all of the Green Goddess fire appliances which were stationed there. Number B4, PGW 35, was given the name 'LADY GODIVA'. The name can just be seen above the Bedford badge on the grill: In this shot of B2, RGC 732, 'LADY GODIVA' is on the left:

A nice collection of photos 20A. If I recall correct, Christmas 1977 (into New Year 1978) was when the army with their Green Godesses (not necessarily the Green Godesses in the photos) were brought back to service during the national Fire Brigade strike. Correct me if I'm wrong, I think the former 5 RRF HQ Company TA Barracks is now where the Greens Road Medical Centre, home to the Springfield and Park Leys Medical Practices, is located.
