It's a great image Prof but I've got this one. However I never know when a slightly different image will show something new. Or even a repost of something I've got might trigger a new observation. eg this image makes me think that there might be a chimney on the right hand side. On the front of the left hand building there's a funny shape like an artist's palette. This was a shoulder blade supposedly from some massive bovine creature slaughtered by a hero I can't recall. It shares a mythology with the Dun Cow. Some think that the creature in the story could be an aurochs but the bone on the gate would be too big and was probably a whale shoulder bone.

Yes, I knew about the fable of the Dun Cow and St George, (there was an image of it in the Upper? Precinct somewhere, or perhaps the Market entrance.) However, after some searching, I have found Pixrobin's super photo of Sir Guy of Warwick slaying the Dun Cow in Shelton Square. I had forgotten this, whereas St George slayed the Dragon of course.

Does anyone know if the stretch of old sandstone wall on Hearsall Lane is part or the original City wall that was relocated? Thanks.

If so there is more of it on Binley Road/Brays Lane and Gulson Road also.

The word 'spon' was probably the stretch of ground or span or space between the town and the old hospital of lepers, and the river in old deeds and plans is shown as Spon Brook.

Was not sure where to put these, no thread specifically for Rope Walk but these have just turned up on FB thanks to Beverley Wishart. They were taken from The Alfred Herbert News - an internal staff magazine. Sir Alfred Herbert purchased the old rope walk as far as Cook Street and Swanswell Gate to clear the area and lay out a garden to be dedicated to his late wife. Here are the pictures of some of the buildings that were demolished, opening up part of the old city wall

Nice pics Neil. They're from the collection I told you about - the creation of Lady Herbert's garden. There are many, many more, including the demolition work, rebuilding the towers (although not as many as I'd like), the landscaping and the final planting.

The first one is at the Swanswell end and I think that it's the Hippodrome you can see the back of. By the time those photos were taken it had been a wood yard rather than the ropewalk. In the second photo, it's looking towards Cook Street and the small building on the left was on the corner of Chauntry Place. The third one is looking right along the remains of the old wall leading to the Cook Street gate way.

Helen, wasn't there a little lane down the side of the Hippodrome where the stage door used to be? Or was that in more recent years, or am I completely lost?

Looking at the 1937 map, there was indeed a path between the old Hippodrome and the remains of the wall, with two sets of steps. Link to map - zoom out a few times to view Thumbs up

Dream, I think that back entrance to the Hippodrome was roughly the site of St Agnes' Lane!
