Books on Coventry

Just finished reading the gem of a book "Master & Artisan in Victorian England" which has been mentioned several times on the forum.A fascinating look into the lives of 2 men in Victorian England, told by themselves. They tell of their work lives indispersed with their travels round the country. (I am sure our Philip would have enjoyed the company of either of them, taking little trips at a moments notice). Gutteridge does go deeply into a chapter on Spiritualism but I was very excited when I came to a passage describing his friend John Yardley a watch case maker who he describes as one of the most remarkable mechanics he has ever met. He mentions he died in 1863 aged 52 and when I checked my tree it turns out he is talking about my G G Grandfather. A good read

I have come across another interesting book "The Mystery of The Coventry Cappers " by Peter King. Very readable.

Spoilt for choice as to where to put this. Had this lovely book for Christmas, Roy actually bought it at the Classic Car Show at the NEC. For anyone interested in the life of George Singer and his family, Coundon Court House and school, Singer Cycling, Cricket and Football clubs (Singer Football Club became Coventry City) and even ghosts, it is a fascinating book.

Did you know that a baker in Smthford St got himself baked in his own oven?

Or he was a well bred boy. or maybe he had a lot of dough.

That scorched baker..The incident occurred at a bakers yard between 54 and 55 Smithford St December 29th 1899. The bakery was locked so the bakers boy was employed to break in. He found his employer 27 year old Frank Morris mostly in the oven, only his boots sticking out of the oven..Police called and no one could understand how he could have got in the oven. Entrance to the oven was about four feet from the ground.....Norman

I was given a copy for my birthday last December. Subscription copy 255. Compiled by A.E. Feltham & produced by Calcott & Feltham, The City Press, Ironmonger Row, in 1927. It was priced at £90 ref 60880 from The Used Bookstore, Nuneaton. The last owner was Evan O.C. Howells, Haynestone, Kenilworth. I wondered if this was the only Coventry book C & F put together? I love all books on Coventry & do have quite an extensive collection, which I am just in the process of cataloguing & always on the lookout for more. No less than two new Coventry books are coming out on August 15th and are available to pre-order from Amberley Books. Coventry's Blitz by David McGrory, paperback, 128 pages, 60 pics, £11.69. Coventry Buses 1914-46 by David Harvey, paperback, 192 pages, 250 pics, £14.39. The latter is now shown at £8.99 but I'm told this is an error.

I would imagine Coventry Blitz will just be a re hash of all the information already in published books. All the same photographs.... I would imagine that all that can be said about the blitz has already been said.. Is it time to put the whole subject to bed?..Perhaps our teenagers may be interested but that's doubtful. For myself who was 10 years old and living in Coventry at the time, the subject has become a tad tiresome..

Perhaps Rob knows more about David McGrory's book?
