That pub's been closed for a while now, hasn't it? At least it's not being demolished.

It's only a matter of time though as it sticks out into the road like a sore thumb. Wouldn't surprise me if a lorry ploughed straight through it one day.

Just had a look on Google Earth at the Black Horse. Dutchman suggests ' it sticks out into the road like a sore thumb'. Was not the case in my youth. That was the alignment of all the houses on that side of the road.

That's an interesting clipping from the paper. I'm surprised that didn't do better being close to a lot of flats and the "new" "trendy" canal basin, which just looks closed every time I'm round that way. Another of the city council false promises it seems. I seem to remember being informed that we were getting a craft/ design and cafe/restaurant area round the canal basin. And still no news on the Butt's Retreat. Enterprise are ignoring me it seems Sad

Hi all Wave A bit of good news for a change on the subject of pubs. Happy http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/wasps-move-adds-up-business-8503058 Anyone who likes a pub crawl, try it using the 360 bus service in either direction, which calls at the Ricoh. You will lose count of the number of pubs that it passes on its circular route. Many of them good eating pubs too. Don't take my word for it. I just do it! Cheers

I'm sure that the Quinns (publicans mentioned in the article) ended up running the Dun Cow at Brinklow in the early/ mid 70's?.

Yes the Quinns did run the Dun Cow in Brinklow. When I worked at RR Ansty in the 70's we used to nip down for lunch. They moved to Brinklow from the Courthouse pub in Blackberry Lane Coventry. Happy Days, nice people!

I'm sure I went once or twice, when visiting Coventry to see my mum and stepfather, to a pub called the Motor (or was that a nickname) I believe in the Foleshill area, or is my memory letting me down again. My mum worked in Cash's around that time. For the record, I had my first pint (under age) in the Wyken Pippen 1958. I believe at that time the Northampton Brewery Company supplied the beer. There may have been a NBC sign on the Pippen then. A group of us used to attend a youth club in the area, can't remember the exact location of it though. One of our group then is the elder brother of 'slash1', who posts on this site.

I think The Motor was on the corner of Dorset Road and Somerset Road, just off Widdrington Road. Probably got the name motor because it was very close to the Daimler Works. Alan H

Glad my memory was correct, I remember when I worked at the Gas Board in the late fifties I used to cycle along the wide entry at the rear of Dorset Road, it went from Daimler Road to Widdrington Road and was quicker than going through Sandy Lane. The Coventry to Nuneaton Railway Line runs alongside the entry and I seem to remember a station called Daimler Halt, probably now been moved to Philip's model railway under a different name. Perhaps Philip could confirm there was a station called Daimler Halt. Alan H
