Oh! THAT Smithfield. I was trying to think of a pub on the corner of Trinity St.
I have some rather unfortunate memories of that pub so I should have twigged it straight away.
If anyone asks me what those memories are I will tell them that I have forgotten. Just old and knackered

Hi All,
First post here, and a question. Does anyone know what's happening with the old Butts Retreat pub in Spon End. Someone has been living there for some time now but still boarded up. I've been hoping that it might re-open but no signs as yet??? Question Andrew Kida

I'm afraid I don't Norman
The pub car park is currently being used by the council to store tree trimming equipment.
It there is anybody inside I think it's to deter arson attacks. There used to be steel shutters on the windows but firemen complained they were unable to gain access to put out fires so they were replaced with wooden boards.

Owned by Enterprise Inns isn't it? - Research them and see why they have trouble attracting licensees.
However, the Butts doesn't currently feature on their website as being available. |

Precisely what I was thinking @Neilsyard. Coventry Rugby club have been attracting a lot of support this year and the pub would be ideal for a pre game drink.
I'll either have to knock on the door and ask or start campaigning Enterprise to sort it out. A place like that shouldn't be left boarded up Andrew Kida

Unfortunately pub companies like Enterprise and punch taverns have priced themselves out of the market by charging exorbitant rents and pushing up the price of beer making it virtually impossible for landlords to make any profit which is why we see so many empty and derelict pubs these days. It`s now put these companies in a dire financial situation so they have been forced to sell them off for building land and alternative use it sickens me to write this as my family and I have all been publicans at one time or another and one still is but i`m afraid pub closures have become a fact of life these days. |

yes I must admit mickw, that seems to be the ongoing trend, but it seems to be the landlords and the customers that suffer. Give it 5 years and all that will be left are 00's of identical Wetherspoons............... Andrew Kida

Hi all
I have enjoyed a few pub crawls of late, obviously visiting pubs that are open. I mentioned on our breakfast thread how much I had enjoyed my pub-way home from that meeting. It is & has always been my intention to visit as many pubs as I can using the Coventry circle bus, 360, in either direction from my home, but there are just too many pubs on the route. Just count them. Many good eating pubs too. This Wednesday, it is my intention to have lunch in a Warwick town pub, where my grandson has worked part-time for the last eighteen months whilst he completes his Sixth form A levels. The X16 will be my means of getting there, so it will be coffee only at the Belgrade this Wednesday morning. I cannot cope with a bacon butty as well as a lunch on the same day. Cheers! |

I see in today's Telegraph The Blackhorse at Spon End is up for change of use, from public house to wholesalers. Another Coventry pub bites the dust. Shame. |
