The good news is that the for sale board now has an `under offer` sticker on it. If the building survives, it`s anyone's guess what it will re-open as.

Re The General Wolfe. Some of the rooms were used by photographers as studios during the late 30s and during the war. I have some photos somewhere that were taken there. I used to visit lots of pubs during the 60s that had live music, but for some reason, never the Wolfe.

I'd love to see your photos Adrian, if you ever get chance! My grandmother lived not far from here and always used to refer to "going up the Wolfe" - whenever she was going out shopping. It took me years to understand what on earth she meant!

You wouldn't want to see these photos, Tony, they are just family portraits. We inherited them when my wife's father passed away. Some are family groups, others individuals, with the logo, Taken 1940, studio, back room, General Wolfe. No name of the photographer but proper studio shots.

Ah, ok, sorry, I thought you meant they were photos taken of the photographers "setup" in the room used as a studio.

I notice that 'The General Wolfe' is under offer. Here in Melbourne when a property is 'under offer' it means that someone has made a firm offer to purchase the property. Is this the case in England or does 'under offer' have a different meaning? If it is for sale it would be such a shame because it will probably be demolished like has happened to so many other lovely Coventry pubs. Gilly.

A property is under offer when a homebuyer has made a formal offer to purchase the property but the homeowner has not confirmed whether to accept. If the offer is rejected then the property remains on the market until the next formal offer is made at which point the homeowner must again decide whether to accept the offer or reject it. If the offer is accepted then it becomes 'Sold Subject to Contract' (Sold STC). Sold STC and Sold STCM Sold 'Subject to Contract' (STC) means that the homeowner has accepted an offer from a buyer but the paperwork is not yet complete. You can still enquire about a Sold STC property as the sale is not complete until the signed contracts are exchanged. Technically the property is still available.

Thank you for clearing that up for me Tony and explaining it all so well. Now when I read the real estate pages from the Telegraph on line, it will make a lot more sense to me. Gilly.

I've sometimes wondered why they would bother putting up a sign saying "Under Offer", but I guess it may be simply to generate further interest and notify any other prospective purchasers to "get a move on" if they were considering also putting in an offer.

I think it's an invitation to gazump.

It seems that all of the pubs mentioned here are big, expensive to run places that need a lot of footfall.

I enjoy a meal at the Wing Wah (New Phoenix) on a regular basis. Fabulous food, excellent value and service and a great place to eat!

The first house we bought was in Rothesay Ave. I think the woods must have been by Job's Lane; but that was pretty much built over when we were there, although I do remember those woods before that, though they were too far away from home for me to have been allowed to go there alone. When you said Peark's, I think you were referring to the Maudslay? So Peark's would have been in the row of shops along from Allesley Old Rd Garage? (Couldn't have been over the road, they were bombed-out houses... )
