The last time I went in there, it was run by Bobby Arthur, the Coventry boxer.

Reminds me of a time years ago when at a night out in the Walsgrave Club, the shout went out that some factory night shift had walked out and the place emptied of housewives!!

Recently purchased this antique bottle It is embossed with SYDENHAM PALACE, COVENTRY. It also has T. OWEN embossed around the top. It is a moulded separate top Imperial Half Pint, with the bottle makers number 849 on the bottom. Thomas Owen was licensee from 1886 to 1913, and the pub closed in 1971 and was demolished. Was it common for licensees to have their own bottles moulded?

Too early for Moderne Mick. Thats an example of simple Art Noveau on the corner of The Rose and Woody. A style popular from 1890 to 1910ish. Nice innit? Post copied from topic Art Deco Buildings in Coventry on 14th Mar 2021 2:35 pm

The Hawthorn Tree, what a great piccie Osmi'. It's another great example and shows just how much pre war development there was in the Tile Hill area. Used to spend my 5/- weekly dinner money every Monday lunchtime in there and go hungry for the remainder of the week as a 5th former at Woodlands, making sure I kept well away from any master smelling alcohol on me in the afternoon. The landlord would turn a blind eye provided we took our school ties off and reversed our jackets and sat quietly in a corner. My mother couldn't understand why I was famished when I got home from school every afternoon saying 'you've had your school dinner, you must have worms!' How bad is that?

Dreamtime, glad to help. Here is a front view. Looking head on, the building is too wide to fit the whole thing in, even from standing across the road on the opposite pavement. Here are the art deco lamp posts. Post copied from topic Art Deco Buildings in Coventry on 14th Mar 2021 2:39 pm

Many thanks Osmiroid, I would hate to see that to be demolished, may it stay for ever. It used to be one of our favourite locals. Thumbs up
