I notice on the guestbook, Dawn Bowie from Alaska is asking for pics and info on the pub. I know there are some pics on the forum but do not know where, can anyone help please? Cheers

There were four pubs with 'Swanswell' in the name! Could you perhaps narrow it down a bit?

Okay, thanks! Thumbs up Opened as the Board Vaults in 1896. Changed its name to the Swanswell Hotel in 1904. Became the Inn Place for a short period in 1998 before being demolished in 1999.

There is another Swanswell pub on the corner of White Street and Swanswell Street, my parents always referred to it as the Little Swanswell, it is still there but I am not sure if it is still a pub or a restaurant etc.

The Swanswell Tavern, known for a time as McGuigan's Bar. There was also a Swanswell Inn further along the same road and a Swanswell Cottage in Leicester Street.

There were buildings to the right of the Swanswell Hotel at one time: Name of pub corrected.

Hi dutchman, I cannot get my bearings on your photo. Is that the pub on the left, and what is the road to the right? As far as I can remember the Swanswell Tavern always stood alone on the corner of Swanswell Street and White Street and the rear of it backed on to the pool.

Swanswell Hotel. The Swanswell Inn was further along Swanswell Street (No56) and renamed The White Swan and later The Jubilee before being pulled-down. Sorry for the confusion. I've since corrected the name of the pub to the left of the shops in the Hales Street photo. Smile

I have amended the title of the thread so that it covers all the "Swanswell" pubs

Dawn Bowie has said on the 5th June 2012 that her mother and father ran the pub but did not tell of any dates. I have found a photo that shows the building in the 1950's. It was not far over the road from the "Old Fire Station", and was near to the Old Hippodrome on Hales Street in the centre of Coventry. In the 1950's, it was a Mitchells and Butler's pub (name of the brewery) and the proper address was no.20 Hales Street. It first opened under the name "Board Vaults" in 1896 but changed its name to Swanswell Hotel in 1904. The building was pulled down in 1999. Sad With regards to people's memories of the pub, anyone heading to Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital would have passed it, maybe fell in the door? There were three steps into the bar if memory serves. I cannot remember seeing the buildings next door, but the ring road system, as it is now, would not be far up the street.
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

An old post but hopefully a new view. The back of this picture says Swanswell Street looking towards White Street.

I remember the sign on the building on the right, it says Matons Funeral Directors. Thumbs up And also we demolished all the properties on the left of the street from the corner by the pub, and I must say it was one of the worst jobs we did. The whole lot was infested with rats because there were sacks of old food like beans and smelly curry powder. See the rats scatter when we pulled them down. Yes if there were ever buildings that needed knocking down these did. Cheers
