I quite like that building, it's very distinctive. Shame it's being demolished,

I was trying to locate the graves of my great grandparents John and Lizzie Green. I wrote to Rev. Marcer in 2002 and he replied that the plan of the old churchyard was damaged and fragile and could not be read until conserved. Does anyone know if this has been done? Thank you Erica F Perkins

Hello & welcome Roseanddaisy,
I hope that someone can answer this as all of the signs at present are of a church disappearing. Whatever the replies on this, we do hope you enjoy your membership with us. |

I went to have a look at the Rudge workers war memorial opposite the St Nicholas Church in Radford this morning and some low-life has stolen the brass plate facing you in this photo off of it.

It's just been bought to my attention this subject had been raised already, so apologies for repeating it. It's just that I found the memorial in the state it is this morning and was disgusted. Triumph - 'The Best Motorcycle in the World'.

I couldn't agree more with your initial comments, Catshed. Its dispicable that anyone could stoop to stealing items such as these for very little in return. But then, if there was tighter controls at scrap yards, maybe it wouldn't be so easy for them to earn any cash at all from their exploits.

It's clear that there must be a scrap merchant somewhere that will buy metals that have clearly been stolen.
I don't think it would be too difficult for the government to tighten up the laws on dealing with scrap metals. Les |

Can I go back to the picture of the bombed church and ask if anyone knows where the picture was taken from in respect of the houses in the background - are these the houses in Dugdale Road?

Hi Adrian1956
This coming Saturday, I will go and stand as near as I can to the point at which the pictures were recorded & see what I can make out. I shall look forward to that. |

Assuming that the wall in the forefront of the photo is the Radford Road wall, and judging by the level of the land beyond the wall, the buildings beyond would certainly be in Dugdale Road |

My thoughts here is that the house in the background is not in Dugdale, as our place did not have any windows in the roof space (that we know of). The locals who have been here longer than I (I have been here since 1984) have recalled a builders yard (Sadlers?) and a bike shop (maybe of the same name) below the old lych gate which I presume was the rear entrance to the church, what amazes me that there were never pictures of the gates, as these days pretty settings for a wedding picture are a must for the brides.

Having walked out about just now, I can answer my own question, the building is in fact Radford Leather, I just did not see the obvious, the trees that surround the plot hide the view from my house and I had to walk down through the grave yard to see it.

Well, I think this is the front of the building, next to Poretta's, we still have coal delivered from there but I like the yard at the back.
