Ah, I see what they've done - the horizontal beam has been removed and put back the other way round, left to right - never noticed that before! The upright piece is the same though. I wonder why that was? |

There was an eagle at one point but wasn't it stolen? Or was there a later one? The story went that when Catholicism fell out of favour the churches were suppose to remove popish things. Some bright spark turned up and claimed it was his job to dispose of things like the eagle and made off with a haul of church treasures. Afterwards they realised that he wasn't legit but I don't think they caught the knave. |

Hello
I have found that a relative was baptised at "St Michael's in the City of Coventry" in 1850. Please could anyone confirm if this would be what is now called the Old Cathedral? Many thanks

Yes, St Michael's is the old Cathedral, although it was a church for most of its life. It was elevated to a cathedral in 1918. The old, old cathedral was St Mary's but that was demolished by Henry VIII. |

A useful resourse for St Michael's, Coventry registers is found in Pickard's pages. My grandmother was baptised there in 1882.
Hope this helps.

As you know I take loads of photos on my visits to Coventry.
Is this a new resin cross that has been placed on the altar in the old cathedral, not noticed it before, as it looks a lot bigger.
Dougie - here's the original "Charred Cross" - it's in the New Cathedral

We have been in over the years to look round, also been to church service there with the family in the past.
I didn't ask the price but at £5 I'll go in again if only to look for the cross and ask is the other cross made of a resin or wood. |

If that's all you want to know for now then I'll save you a fiver Dougie! Yes, the cross on display in the ruins is a resin replica, placed there in 1964 to stand in for the original, which went on a world peace tour, then on its return was stored safely in St. Michael's Hall beneath the new cathedral. |
