With the help of Rob who has a pc of this photo (I found it listed on another site) is this wonderful close up view of the chancel in 1931 showing the glorious stained glass (this is sepia but in full colour it must have been an astounding sight) and I had never seen this one before,

I never had the chance to see the cathedral in it's splendour Prof only the proud shell so thank you for posting the photo to us. It certainly makes a beautiful sight.

My thanks also. Yes, a wonderful photograph. Dreamtime, I was fortunate enough to have been taken several times to services there, and I remember I gawped every time, with a service in progress, the music, the choirboys, the golden eagle, it was breathtaking, I can't find the words, but it held people in some kind of a spell. I believe people attended probably for that reason as much as religion. I also attended Longford Church and the small church in Lentons Lane where I was a choirboy, every Sunday and one night a week, would see me in one church or another so I heard the elders' anger when no attempt was made to restore the cathedral, as I believe in those days people had a deeper feeling than we can imagine, it was their time.

Thanks for your comments Dreamtime and Kaga. Sadly I never knew the cathedral in its former glory though I often wonder whether in the first two years of my life my mother may have taken me inside. She died when I was 12 so I shall never know the answer to that. I can well imagine the impression made on Kaga as I attend an Abbey near where I live where the music and liturgy is equally enticing.

With the roof on, the interior has a grandeur the ruin cannot capture.

Quite right Flapdoodle. As I always say, the nearest comparison is to go inside Holy Trinity to get some of the atmosphere but St Michael's being larger and on a grander scale with that wonderful East End of the radiating chapels beneath (now a museum) had the most striking East window of many parish churches let alone cathedrals. To see it in colour - well magnificence!

Archaeological finds in Cathedral

Prof, the last time I attended a morning service in the old cathedral I believe I was ten years old and it could have been Harvest Festival time. The great glass window glorious in colour, with all the hues of the rainbow. There can be no question to its beauty, was a great joy to all. But did it fit in with the stone walls of the old building where calm and stillness dwelt from its medieval past.
