Wonderful news just announced that The Higgs Charity, in conjunction with Coventry City Council and Coventry University are hoping to restore Drapers Hall for use as a Centre of Music Excellence!
Coventry Performing Arts might also be then based there, where pupils of all ages, from schools across the city, will be able to attend and learn and play music.
Sadly the building couldn't be opened for the recent Heritage Day because of a collapsed ceiling in one of the rooms.
They are also looking to build up a new Library of Sheet Music, and have asked for the donations of suitable items from the public.
Fabulous news - I look forward to seeing the plans. |

I didn't see that news item Morgana, but it's great to hear that they're putting the place to such good use. |

I am delighted to read (and I watched the video) that Draper's Hall will be put to good use as a new music centre for Coventry. A good use and the restoration of an important historic building in the city centre. |

From a 1979 book, Warwickshire in 1790, the Landscape Histories series - the original Drapers Hall in Bailey Lane built 1775.

A nice image from the Aylesford Collection held in Birmingham. St Mary Street - then Half Moon Lane - was through the archway on the right. The original Great Drapery was where that small building stood and over part of the later Drapery (shown in the picture). It stretched from Bayley Lane to Earl Street. Not much is known about its appearance. I believe that the Wool Hall was the building you can just see on the very right of the picture. |

Fantastic MR. Following a link from that page there are details about the dig and the original archaeologist Ray Wallwork.

To put the location into perspective - this is the map and a line I think matches the north/south feature to the dig.
And the buildings that fronted onto Bayley Lane looked like these on the left.

Hi everyone,
Here is a link to a blog that I wrote for Coventry Archives on Drapers Hall.

Although I am on Facebook, I'm also unable to view this page - I'm guessing that we'd need to belong to a specific "group" to view it? Is it possible for you to copy any of the images and post them here for us all to see? |
