Lower Precinct Circular Cafe

I worked as a Saturday/Sunday girl in the round cafe in the early sixties and it never moved at all while I was there. I sometimes worked in the small cubby in the base, at ground level, where people could order hot dogs, burgers and drinks. There were a few tables to sit at but it was never busy. It was solidly anchored into the ground. Upstairs, those ring doughnuts, with whipped cream topping, were our best sellers. Tipping was almost unheard of then, the only customers who regularly did were the people who worked at the Chinese restaurant at the entrance to where the Kongoni cafe was on Market Way. We servers were each allotted several tables and we always hoped that they would choose our table as we were sure of a sixpence tip. Sometimes we went over to the Pancake Parlour to work, as the businesses were owned by the same company or person.
