I don't think that it's the Holyhead Road either because there are no front gardens. You're right, it's not Cow Lane but you're looking for somewhere oldish, because of the lack of garden. |

So I was going to post a question about one of the kids' sketches with clues about where it might be. However after a burst of random inspiration I worked out what the sign was meant to be. Amos Sad, turns out to be John Amos, saddler at 30 Cook Street. Although the sign could say 'Sold' because the next time I find Amos he's in West Orchard. I assumed that Against the Old.... might be Tower but it's not against the gatehouse or even the Old Tower Tavern. I think that the picture is actually of the entry to Chauntry Place but maybe it's the market? No wonder it's taking me years to work out where these pictures represent!
Thanks go to Heathite or I'd never have got this far.

Just going back to the previous picture, is it definitely Coventry, could it possibly be Holyhead Road Birmingham? |

Great idea Anne. I typed in Holyhead Road and milk cart and it looks like the picture is Wednesbury. |

J S Godfrey took over the shop at 40 Spon Street in the 1920's. There is a picture on pinterest of the shop which looks like the same building. Search for Godfrey 40 Spon Street
A better image of No.40 has turned up on FB thanks to Gray Forster -

This one is clearly looking across to Queen Victoria Road but where do we think its actually taken from? I know there was a scrub land car park behind by the side of Croft Road but it looks bigger than that? I was thinking possibly clearance work for the then new Co-op or even from the Drill Hall? What do you think Rob as those units would possibly have been to the side of the GEC?

I reckon you're right about it looking out across the clearance work for the Co-Op back in the 1980s. Looks like it was taken from somewhere near the junction of the tiny Rudge Road and Croft Road - now near the entrance to the SkyDome carpark. |

I don't know if they were built before or after the Co-op but there was a row of little shops on the left of the car park. One of them was the Myton Hospice shop. They were demolished along with the Co-op when Ikea was built. |

I'm pretty certain that you're spot on there, Neil. Zooming in on the 1888 map, the curvature of the river, plus the small buildings jutting out on the left, match perfectly. |

So from the recently discovered Cooper Collection - a few mysteries to resolve. I have a hunches but putting them out here -
1. The sign says Charterhouse Motor Repaint & Repairs? There was a Charterhouse garage on Northfield Road on the 1920s and they did back on to the Sherbourne....
2. And another of the same spot -
3. Someone suggested Hay Lane but I'm not sure it is -
4.
5.
Get hunting everyone! This collection made my weekend (along with the Sky Blues result! )
