I am proud to say that I was part of the last team to move out of the hospital and I now work in the Health Centre. It is such a shame as my Grandmother was a Matron at Cov & Warwick in the early 60's.
It is a shame - I worked in the Operating Theatres there on and off from the mid 80's until early 2000's when I was the theatre manager. Was definitely the best hospital I've ever worked in and still miss it!

Here's the old C&W Physiotherapy & Rheumatology Occupational Therapy building - just after it closed in 2007 It's the smaller sign on the door that's interesting. I wonder if it was used for that purpose before or after it closed! Oh my

It was after the Hospital closed in July 2006, as the Police used the Canteen and X Ray Dept to train Police dogs, it was a bit of a pain when we moved into the main block as all we could hear was the dogs barking and scary walking past to get to your car in the morning as they would bark at you when you were least expecting it.

Yes, you are correct, large parts closed in 2006, I took a number of photos in 2007. It's strange really, I thought that the general condition of the hospital was "OK" - until I look back a some of the pics, and realise that large parts of it were a dump! Sad Still sad, after 123 years, to see it go though Oh my

I think the problem with the old Hospital was it was built on, then built on again, slowly restricting the access for the ambulances and to the car parking. When the Paybody unit was built onto it, although very new at the time, they didn't have any space left but to put it where it was, making access to A & E a nightmare. Cars parked on any bit of road or path they could find. The same is happening at St Cross in Rugby. The Coventry and Warwickshire will always bring back memories for a lot of people, some good and some not so. I had my leg stitched up there after a nail went through it. I was about 8 years old, it was on the day of my sister's wedding, page boy suit and all. But it is sad to see the old C & W go. The Grave as it's known is if not worse for getting in and around and parking. Big grin
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

C&W looked after me well in 1973 when I had a serious motorcycle accident. They informed me afterwards that it was 50/50 whether they amputated my leg or not! I was in the 5 bed ward in Philip Ward along with Les Owen the Coventry Bees rider. Most of the Bees team at the time plus Charles Ochiltree came to visit him. It was good fun in the ward with the rest of the motorbike accident lads and we kept our spirits up pretty well. There was a very camp porter working on the ward called Dennis. He was so 'over the top' but totally hilarious and he had us all in stitches (no pun intended) every time he was on duty. I believe he also had a twin brother who held a similar position at Warwick Hospital. My sister was a physiotherapist at C&W for many years, so the old place holds many memories. Sad to see it finally disappear for good. Sad

This was the rather dark entrance, as was, to A&E. The new Paybody building would have been through this "tunnel" and to the left. The x-ray was straight in front of you as you came out the other side.

Oh my goodness - how sad! Sad and your first pic WAS the main entrance? ... and the really strange thing is, if you go to Google Maps and look at the area on Street View, it all looks just the same as it did in 2008! Oh my

Its just been announced that the cleared site goes up for sale today. They expect it to used for "predominantly" housing, with "some high-rise". Hope that doesn't mean what I think it means.
