Hi everyone Can anyone help. I am looking for a more detailed map of Gilbert Street, in particular number 23 that stood off the main street up an alleyway or entry in the 1860s. On my 1887 map there is no close detail to show where my ancestors lived, working as weavers. In my research I have spotted other dwellings in the area were using bar looms and I have a question for everyone to answer. Was the loom used to weave wool or silk? Tony

From the 1871 Coventry Standard in the newspaper archive. Several houses in Gilbert Street were being sold

I believe that's the toilet block? Oh my Unusually it has one toilet for each household. This location seems more likely to me: To view the original please visit https://www.old-maps.co.uk/

This photograph was taken in February 1973. It is the corner of Gilbert Street and Vernon Street in Hillfields, the site of the former Royal Albert pub which was demolished in 1972. It stood alone for a period after the terraced houses around it were demolished. My great-grandfather James Aldridge was the landlord of the Royal Albert from 1901 until 1919. According to my grandfather, his son, he drank the profits away and was an all round pretty nasty character!

Great shot, Humber. From Fred and Rob's pub section, I'm thinking after looking at maps this is taken from Vernon Street looking west, whereas your shot was still Vernon Street but looking more northeast.

According to the Coventry Herald, the licence was transferred to James Aldridge in June 1901, from Harry Aldridge.

Yes, the way I imagine things is that my Triumph Herald there would have been parked on Gilbert Street, level with the three storey bit of the old pub and that rather splendid shot of the pub standing all on its own would have been taken from the opposite side of the road from my car.... in a northerly...ish direction? with Vernon Street going off on the right. It's a bit confusing now that this original road layout has all gone. I also have another photo of the pub standing on its own (probably taken in 1972) with my grandfather (Cecil Aldridge) leaning against the window sill on the side of the pub around the corner to the right a little which would have been on Vernon Street. He was reminiscing about how he used to court his wife (Elizabeth Bartlett) there. Unfortunately I've mislaid that photo, but if I come across it I'll post it here. Very interesting chatting about this, thank you.
